Can I get into UT College of Natural Sciences without taking Calculus?

I am a highschool senior who has automatic admission to UT Austin. Today, I was looking at the admission prerequisites for the College of Natural Sciences and was blindsided by this: “Freshman applicants considering a major in the College of Natural Sciences should take at least a beginning calculus (not pre-calculus) course during high school.” I have taken precal, but not calculus. Can I still get in to the CNS or is there absolutely no chance?

That is unusual…

If you have taken precalculus already, why not take calculus this year?

It seems especially weird because it’s not even required for Engineering, just Natural Sciences! I have a very tight schedule this year and the only thing I would be able to give up is my only elective, which might be what I have to do, I guess. But then I will be taking all AP Core classes in a semester:/

What other courses are you taking?

Choosing not to take calculus after completing precalculus in 11th grade or earlier will look worse than not being able to take calculus because it is not offered or your middle school math placement does not allow it.

I was planning on taking AP statistics as my senior year math, but I think I am going to switch it to calculus AB.

Good idea to take calculus if you are planning on a natural science major. At the high school level, statistics is best thought of as an academic elective, rather than a core math course, for those who will need calculus in college (basically all science majors, all engineering majors, economics, business, and possibly some other social studies majors).

You may have to take statistics in college, but you can choose (or be required) to take a calculus-based statistics course, depending on your college and major.

No, only for Environmental Science “To be considered for admission to Environmental Science (Biological Sciences), you must meet the university’s calculus readiness requirement.”

There is a math readiness test that is given at orientation to many UT Austin students. You can find information here: https://cns.utexas.edu/ut-math-assessment

Thank you, that is very helpful! However, I still am not really sure if they will accept me without the calculus class… Do you have anymore info on this?
