Hello All,
I am planning to go to Biology major for undergrad to Loyola Marymount University because it is close to my home. I was wondering if having undergrad from LMU that is not as well known for Biology will decrease my chance to go to medical school. I appreciate any feedback.
Just finish with a high GPA and MCAT and you’ll be fine.
You can go to medical school from any undergraduate program.
Thank you for your responds. I also accepted at UC Davis for Biology. It is hard to make a decision between LMU and UCD. I received scholarship from LMU and I live close to LMU and I think I would have more time to focus on my GPA since I don’t have to move out from home if I go to LMU. On the other side, I have UCD that is more emphasize on health and Biology and might be better for graduate school to come from UC; but then I need to move out to the new environment and at the end as far as cost of school might be the same. It is hard to make my decision.
Thank you for your feedback. Do you think medical schools care if the undergrad is from private or more recognized school like UC Davis?
Nope. Either will be fine. Pick the one that is both affordable and the most likely candidate to result in a high GPA.
My wife and I are both physicians. We are strong believers that you can go to medical school from any college and with any major as long as you have completed your medical school pre-requisites. My wife has been part of an admissions team for a major East Coast program and the most interesting candidates are non-science majors from LACs. We do NOT recommend being a “Pre-Med” major.
Thank you so much for your feedback. I just want to make sure graduating from private school (LMU) won’t effect my graduate school admission. Also, this school is not recognize as health and biology major.
