Hi, I am a student at a community college and i just applied for transfer to five UC’s as an international relations major. I have always wanted to do premed but i also got interested in international relations, i had most of my classes in int’l relations so i went ahead and declared it my major. However, i still have a passion for biology and i have always wanted to pursue a career in medicine, since i love both things i have come to realize i want to help people who are in crisis across the globe. My dream would be to travel to third world countries as a surgeon to help those in need, but i also love studying foreign policy and would also love to have an impact on that spectrum. I know you do not need to be a “hard science,” major to get into med school. I know you need one year in general biology, physics, chemistry etc. My question is if i transfer will i be able to take those hard sciences at the UC even if i’m an international relations student? and if i cant do that what can i do? Any advice??
Why wouldn’t you be able to take those classes?
Idk if they make your schedules for you or if you can pick electives or some courses you might want?
Yes, you can take those pre-med courses in your elective space, but you need to choose very carefully in order to complete both the pre-med courses and your upper division major courses in your remaining four semesters or six quarters.
