Can I have a teacher from a summer course write me a letter of rec?

I took an AP-level class over the summer at a well-respected university, and I wanted to have my teacher from the class write me a letter of recommendation (in addition to the two or three I have from teachers at my own high school). Has anyone ever done this? Should I "invite" him the way I would invite teachers from my own high school on the common app?

Thanks!

skylimits, this is a fine idea assuming that it is, as you have suggested, a supplemental rec. It’s worth doing if you are fairly certain that this teacher will give you an excellent recommendation.

I generally suggest that supplemental recs be sent directly to your school college counselor. First because then he/she can read them and determine if they will add positively to your application. Sometimes a counselor may decide not to send the supplemental rec, but will quote from it or refer to it in his/her own recommendation. Either way, it’s nice to have your school counselor see additional proof that teachers and other adults you have had contact with think great things about you!

Good luck with your applications!
