its a dorm not a hostel

Yes you can keep the cord connected into your computer if thats what you mean

But if you have a lot of roommates and not enough jacks then you will need to share

thanks kenshi, that's some help! sorry, i am not aware of the US jargon.

And a lot of schools now are going to a wireless campus, although dorms seem to be last on the list. If your dorm is near a building that has wireless, you may be able to get a good connection that way. My dorm is by the commons area that has wireless but technically my dorm is not wireless. On clear weather days I get full connection and at the other end and on the lower floors (closer to the building), they get full wireless connection all the time. But I'd go with a cord just in case.

If there aren't enough jacks, you can always get a wireless hub and set it up so you and your roommate can use it...if you split the cost it should be around $30 per person for a double, $20 for a triple, and about $10-15 per person for an entire suite.

Shouldn't be anywhere near $60 for an ethernet switch. Here's one for $11 (plus shipping): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817111489 - that is, assuming you even need one - which you probably won't.

You'll want an ethernet hub or switch over a wireless router as it will cost less and many schools do not allow wireless routers because they conflict with the school's own wireless.
