Can I Play Basketball At Harvard with this SAT score???

I am currently the Varsity Basketball Captain of my school and have about a 3.9 GPA but my SAT score is 1890. My dream is to play college basketball at an Ivy League School and I have been invited by many Ivy Leagues to attend their Elite Basketball Camp. I will be going to Harvard in the summer to display my basketball skills. How much will my SAT score affect whether or not I get into Harvard for basketball? Also, I have to take SAT II's in October so I don't think that I can take the SAT again and besides this score of an 1890 is on my second attempt. What should I do???

What did you score on the Math and Critical Reading portions?

Critical Reading: 570 (I suck)
Math: 670 (About 70-80 points lower than expected) ;(

But I got a 730 in SAT II Math and I’m retaking in October because I want an 800…

I’d suggest you search for threads on IVY league and NESCAC athletic recruiting … athletic recruits need to fit into bands based on their academic performance … schools can give some breaks to athletic recruits including bigger breaks to a few recruits … typically to get one of the bigger breaks (and I’d think the 1890 SAT requires a bigger break) you’d need to be an impact player on an impact sport. Harvard is increasing their focus on bball so that helps your causse … the next question is how big an impact you might have on their team and how bad the coach wants you. PS - the obvious biggest lever in the situation is to retake the SATs (or take the ACT) and see if you can bring it up.

Harvard looks both at academics and athletics. 1890 probably will not cut it, but in any case, if you are exellent at basketball, it may be better for you to go straight to the NBA.

The coaches there know the parameters and will let you know if this is a possibility for you.

If that 3.9 is unweighted and you can average ~700 on your 2 SATii tests, you should still be potentially recruitable at Harvard. If that’s a weighted GPA, 730s on your SATii would be a good goal.

Of course, Coach is the one who can give you a definitive answer.

@3togo: I don’t really know when to retake it because if I do in October then when will I take my SAT II’s as I am going to be applying for EA and ED to some schools. But your right, I should.

@Equuleus: Haha. LOL! I wish I could go to the NBA but I’m not at that level yet buddy…

Right now that GPA is unweighted. Yeah, I’ll talk to Coach Amaker…

how about in June? Nothing to lose other than a few hours of your life.

First, I’m going to need more time to prepare to make my score cross 2000+ and I haven’t even registered for June.

Second, My IB Final Exams start Monday and I really want to do well on that so I don’t want there to be another distraction.

You can also take ACT in september.

If I’m not mistaken, it’s not offered in September but October…

ACT will have one in September, SAT won’t. They have nt published 2011-12 yet.

[ACT Registration : Test Dates in the U.S., U.S.Territories, and Canada](<a href=“ACT Registration | ACT Testing Dates | The ACT Test”>ACT Registration | ACT Testing Dates | The ACT Test)

I forgot to mention, even though I’m a U.S. citizen I am doing my high school due to my dad’s job. So for international test dates, they don’t have one for September…

“I am doing my high school abroad.” Sorry for the typo.

If you can break a 2000 on the SAT you should be set. Harvard is going hard with bball recruiting, especially after clinching their first Ivy League title 3 months ago. You also wont get a lot of playing time if you’re a guard…just a word of caution.

What do you mean guards won’t get a lot of playing time??? How do you know that???

Harvard’s a young team with some quality guards - but Amaker’s not going to bring anybody on board that he doesn’t think will contribute.

I mean freshman year you will not get a lot of playing time due to the quality/endurance of the starting guards. Maybe you can work hard enough for a 6th man role, but for all intents and purposes you won’t have a real shot until you’re a sophomore.
