Hi! I’m currently a sophomore in high school and I know I still have a bit of time until college, but I’m getting really paranoid.
By the end of high school, I’ll have:
4 regular classes (1 from freshman year, 2 from sophomore and 1 from junior)
*they forced me into a regular earth science class because they didn’t offer honors
5 honor classes (3 freshman year, one sophomore year and one junior year)
6 APs (1 from sophomore year, 2 junior year and 3 for senior year)
Will having regular classes affect my chances of getting accepted?
I have a decent amount of EC and I know I can get pretty good recommendations from teachers and can write a good essay.
As for ACT, I hope to get a 30-31 but who knows.
Can I still get into Colgate?
airfire1928,
Let’s take stock here. You are a sophomore in high school and are considering possible opportunities for your college experience and beyond.
Here’s my advice: Please calm down and make the most of your high school years. That is, do what you have to do, do what you want to do, and thrive in your environment. Maybe an idea is to channel some of your energies into researching who you were last year, how you have changed and what stimulates you academically or otherwise while also doing some website investigations on a list of 5-10 colleges for what they offer. This may assist in formulating themes for those very important essays that many applications solicit.
Bottom line: You have no better or worse chance of gaining admission to any college or university at this point. Just ensure that you challenge yourself, take a full course load and get ready for what’s ahead next year when you will take the SAT and/or ACTs.
Best of luck with your college search!
I would have to agree with markham’s advice. As a current high schools senior, I remember being in your position. It’s right for you to want to get a jump start on the process because it does creep up on you if you’re not careful, but as for right now, the only thing I would recommend doing is visiting campuses and getting a feel for which schools you actually could see yourself attending. To speculate the second half of your high school career really doesn’t do much for you because it’s all based on assumptions.
You sound like someone who pushes themselves in their course load and succeeds in classes, so make it a priority to continue to do that to the best of your abilities. As for SATs/ACTs give yourself ample time to prepare (possibly starting as early as this summer). Worst case you’ve given yourself enough time to take it multiple times and best case you finish early and have take a huge thing off your list early.
This process is one of the hardest if not the hardest that people our age have to go through at this age, and if you invest yourself into it too early, you may burn yourself out by the time you actually have to apply. Just work your hardest and jump at the opportunity to do things that interest you, they’ll come in handy when it’s time for supplements. And just relax a little for right now. It’s definitely not far away for you, but believe it or not you don’t have to stress over it too much right now. Good luck in all your work and I wish you the best when it’s your time to apply
