I’m currently going on 11th grade after this summer and I’m taking APUSH, AP Lang and AP Chem. Sophomore year I took AP World History. I started High School with Algebra 1 in 9th grade and I’m taking Algebra 2/Trig in junior year. I’ve managed to keep a total GPA of 3.9583 and a weighted gpa of 4.1. My councellor said that if I’m not in AP calc by senior year, that the chances of making it into UCLA is very slim. Is this true? If so, should I take pre-calculus over next summer to catch up?
Are you planning to major in a Math intensive major such as Engineering/STEM? How does your HS course rigor compare to your fellow classmates? Do you have any test scores: PSAT/ACT/SAT? What are your EC’s?
Course rigor is only one part of your UC application, so if you are exceling in other areas, it can make up for less rigorous Math curriculum.
I completely agree @Gumbymom. You are going into junior year, pay extra attention to stabdardized tests and ECs. You do have plenty of time to make arrangements to take precalculus over the summer (it is a year away). Talk with you parents (you probably have already) to start weighing your options for where the course is available. Also, do not get discouraged by your counselor!
depends on your major. also, I’m in pretty much the same situation as you. I took geo freshman year, algebra 2 sophomore year, but did not get the 96% required (stupid pre req) to get into honors pre calculus. only other option was this trig class or ap stats, so im taking ap stats. instead of waiting until senior year to take pre calc, im taking math at my local community college. I highly recommend this!! courses are only a semester long, so I’m on track to finish up to calc 3 before I graduate high school, which is actually way further than what i would have gotten if I had done HPC and then Calc through my school. not getting into pre calc was a blessing in disguise, because now I am able to go further and get the college credit. i recommended you do the same and take classes at CC
