Can someone tell me if I've got this right. So far I've read that you do not need to take an ap course to take an ap exam and that you can choose not to report an ap score, so if I take an exam that I didn't take the course for and do poorly can I hide it completely from colleges? I'm asking because my school doesn't offer an ap physics course but does offer an advanced physics course and I was wondering if I could simply self study the remaining material and take take the test without suffering any repercussions if I do poorly. Asides from, that is, the $89 the test will cost.

None at all.

If you’re a fresh/soph/junior, and you find out you get a 1-2 on the exam, simply call and have it removed.

If you’re a senior and you send in a 1-2… it doesn’t impact admissions decisions.

The only requirement to take the exam is the $89.00. Despite what people say elsewhere on CC, there is no down side to taking an AP Exam. As div301 pointed out, a poor showing on an AP Exam does not have any negative admission repercussions. It shows a willingness to extend yourself and take risks, especially if your course was not a “full” AP Physics program. Colleges prefer this trait to the person who obsesses with presenting a perfect profile.
