Can I take Geometry over the summer at a community college?

So I’m a sophomore in Algebra 1, despite the fact that I should have been in Geometry because I had passed Algebra 1 as a Freshman with an A+. They apparently dropped me down because Geometry was too “full”. So I had to retake Algebra 1 this year, which is complete garbage. Anyways, I want to get myself passed Geometry so I can do Algebra 2 next year because my school won’t allow me to take Algebra 2 without taking Geometry. So I went to talk to the counselor and she told me I can’t do summer school there or online for Geometry because I’m not allowed to advance myself because they give priority to the kids who failed it. So I want to know if I could just go to a community college and take Geometry to advance myself, even if I won’t get any credits since I’m not missing any,

I’m not sure any community colleges offer regular high school Euclidean Geometry.

Non-Euclidean Geometry is NOT what you want. It’s a different course entirely.

But if you can find it, check with your guidance counselor. I’m sure there are rules in place.

You can’t take high school geometry anywhere besides a high school. College level geometry would require knowledge from Algebra 2.

Honestly, your high school is ridiculously HORRIBLE. If I were you or your parents I would’ve switched you to another school! It’s unacceptable to make a student retake Algebra 1 when you had an A+. Literally, I have no idea why you’re still at that school. My best advice would be to quit the school you’re at, then enroll in your local public school and take Geometry online. Shame on your school!

Too full? That’s ridiculous. Anyway, I would just take it online, if possible. Just make sure you really spend some time on the concepts and nail them down. I’m not gonna lie, I should have focused more on concepts in Geometry as oppose to just getting an A. Good luck!

You can take it through a virtual high school, such as FLVS (the State of Florida’s virtual high school). Problem solved!

next time you’re told a class you have a right to take is full, bring your parents (and perhaps your attorney, because there have been cases when math classes were full for A students who were girls, or minorities.) This is completely unacceptable. At the very least, you should be allowed to take it online.
Honestly, sometimes I understand parents who homeschool because of HS rigidity!!

I agree with others that it’s absolutely ridiculous you were dropped and forced to retake Algebra 1, if switching schools is an option then I think you should do it.

Places to take geometry online:
FLVS, as mentioned above
CTY JHU
Art of problem solving, maybe (their courses are good but I’ve heard they tend to favor material not in a typical classroom and neglect the traditional stuff, so it might not be ideal for skipping)
Apex Learning
ALEKS
BYU

I’m not familiar with all of these, some I’ve only heard of elsewhere in CC but never investigated, so take it with a grain of salt.

I’ve heard BYU isn’t that great, but still look into it ^

Yeah, I’ve also heard negative things about BYU, but I figured it was worth throwing out there.

No worries, just putting that out there ahead of time

I guess my only question is why you waited until March to question their wisdom in putting you back into a course you had already done so well in. It sounds to me like an error that could have been easily rectified in September. But at this point in the year, no school in the country would let you change courses.

Speak to your guidance counselor about options. Is there any way you could double up on math next year, maybe take Geometry and Algebra II & Trig at the same time? Ask her about the SAT, since you’ll want Algebra II & Trig under your belt before you take it next May.
