Can I take upper division courses

…if I have less than 90 units? I’ve been getting conflicting answers about this.

Hmm. I would assume so, but not really sure. Your major advisor should be able to answer this explicitly.

I hope so, because I took an upper div course last year spring quarter as a freshman (definitely had <90 units) and got an A+…

In general, exceptions can be made as long as the professor wants you in the class. For instance, undergraduates can take graduate-level courses. Not sure if they need a PTA from the professor or can register normally but I know people who have done it.

Shoyon, did you have to do anything special to get in the class, or did you just register for it on sisweb? Did you have to wait for Pass 2 or Open?

I’ve met a few sophomores/frosh would have taken upper division classes already (english major here). So I definitely know it’s allowed.

I spoke with a professor the other day who said that as far as she knows, undergraduates can even register for graduate-level (2XX) courses without any special permission or waiver.

Awesome, thanks so much everyone! My RA said underclassmen can’t sign up for upper division courses, but I heard from other people it was possible. Thanks for clearing it up.

@JeSuis:
No, it didn’t require special permission but I did need a PTA since the class was full.

And your RA shouldn’t have answered that question, we are told to refer academic questions to the academic advisers since we may not be 100% correct, as your RA clearly wasn’t.

Also, if it doesn’t bother you saying, pm me letting me know who told you. I just want to get a good laugh since we all pretty much know each other.
