can i transfer to williams

I just completed my first semester at Grove City College (PA) and am looking to transfer to Williams College. My GPA for the first semester was 3.7 (taking six courses about half required intro courses and half upper level courses). In high school, my resume of outside achievements, activities and volunteer work was quite respectable..... I earned a 3.6 and scored a 1290 on my SATs. Is it impossible for me to get into Williams as a fall 2006 transfer? Is the emphasis more on high school or college performance? I did not apply to Williams originally. Any help would be much appreciated. Oh and I am a Caucasian male which I doubt helps my cause but let me know. thanks

Slim chance. Sorry. There's still an emphasis on high school performance because you've only had less than a year at your current college, so your SAT scores and high school transcript will still come into play. Your GPA is decent, but should be better, especially if you're coming from a college of that level.

Exeuntsl thanks for the info just one quick question though…..
"Your GPA is decent, but should be better, especially if you're coming from a college of that level." I am legitimately confused ( I have little interest in defending the college so this is not in any way meant to be defensive) Are you saying that my GPA should be higher because Grove City is competitive or it should be higher because Grove City is not academically rigorous? Although Grove City is often overlooked because of its unique religious and political views it is actually quite competitive (in 2004 it was listed by Barrons as one of the 65 Most Competitive Colleges and Universities) Once again I don’t know if this has much if any influence on my transfer chances at Williams I was just wondering if the competitiveness of the college makes a difference. Thanks again

He meant because it is not nearly as competitive. Top 65 isn't like going to a community college maybe, but it isn't like going to a top-20 for sure. Be aware that if you have that GPA at your current school, you'd likely find Williams MUCH more difficult to get As at.

no thats bs, williams isnt exponentially more challenging than other quality liberal arts colleges...i dont buy that for a second. the truth of hte matter is that there is little disparity in terms of academic quality between top 100 lacs. That said, you obviously stand a CHANCE but williams and amherst accept so few applicants that most are people who were accepted as freshman and chose other institutions. You have a solid chance at other top schools though like tufts, colgate, hamilton, etc...look into it

I'm sorry dear aca, but that is not bs. I have attended classes at other schools, and in my experience more selective schools' classes are much more intense, and that's just a difference between a #19 and a top-5. Trust me, I was you a year ago. I said that's bs, because I wanted to believe in the liberal ideal that one population wasn't smarter than another. I still don't believe that, per say, but I have been convinced beyond doubt that a population's SAT scores pretty accurately reflects a combination of the students' natural and prepared capabilities, and classes at more selective schools tend to be harder.

I'm not saying gg would fail out of Williams or anything, but they would likely be significantly farther down in class rank.

thanks everyone i appreciate all the help
