Hello!

I'm filling out my common app and I'm wondering if I could use a previously written essay I wrote in my junior year? (last year) My english teacher said she loved it and I did really well on it (probably because she's really short :D)

So basically my essay is about what it's like to be a tall girl (6'1"). Anywho, I figured it would make me unique because most girls aren't tall. I talked about the struggles I had growing up and living up to everyone's expectations of me, and how people perceive me. Also, I talked about how being tall has been beneficial to me with helping me overcome my shyness. Obviously I wrote more about the topic but those are some basic themes. Is this unique enough? I really loved writing it but it's like serious and I'm a humorous person so i don't know if I should change it so it's more comedic.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can definitely use that! My English teacher had us write college essays and she edited them in case we wanted to use them as our personal statement. Your topic sounds like it can be interesting, too (assuming you execute it well!)

Did you submit it to a plagiarism checking site like turnitin.com? If so, it may turn up if they ever decide to check it for plagiarism. And some of those plagiarism checkers don’t show specific authors so they wouldn’t know it was you.

That sounds like a really interesting, unique topic, so I would say definitely go for it! If you want, try throwing in some hints of humor to make it feel more personal. In drafts of my common app essay, I’ve occasionally been using snippets from writing I’ve done in the past when they fit my topic. Just watch out for what ptontiger16 said.

I actually just read an essay from someone yesterday about how being a tall girl affected their life, but if you present it in a unique way, it’s probably fine.
