Can one apply for financial aid after being accepted? Thank you for your answer.
You can always apply for government aid that is determined by FAFSA, assuming you are an eligible applicant. For institutional aid, it depends on the school, but for the large majority of schools, the answer is yes. Appying for institutional aid and receiving it are two very different things, especially if you are starting later in the game.
BelknapPoint is right. However, you should keep in mind that applying for financial aid after being accepted can lead to delays and thus impact your ability to meet any upcoming payments. So you should always apply as early as possible.
*institutional financial aid, that is.
The question on the application for admission is Do you need financial aid. Does the financial aid mean both institutional and government aids? Will applying for the financial aid especially need based affect one’s chance to be admitted?
Every school that I’m aware of that offers institutional financial aid requires that the student complete the FAFSA, so the answer is both.
Any impact on admissions decisions depends on whether the particular school is need aware or need blind in admissions. If need aware, then yes, applying for financial aid can have an impact on chances.
You need to check the schools. If a school is need aware, and you didn’t apply for aid prior to acceptance, you might find you aren’t eligible for institutional need based aid…because that heed aware school accepted you thinking you would be full pay.
It seems one had better not to apply for the financial aid in order to increase the chance of getting into the top school. Does it make sense?
If you apply to a school that is need aware to get the admissions edge…and don’t apply for need based aid…it’s possible you will lose out on this option…because you were accepted with the idea you would be full pay.
Did you do this or is this a hypothetical question?
What school?
And if you NEED financial aid to attend a school…it is pointless NOT to apply for aid. If you can’t afford the costs you won’t be able to attend. Getting an admissions “edge” and then not having funds to attend might just as well be a rejection.
No, it does not make sense. Many of the “top schools” are need blind for admissions, and whether or not an applicant has asked for financial aid has no bearing at all on being admitted.
Since asking for financial aid has no bearing at all on being admitted, can the school still make an offer of admission without financial aid package although the student has already asked for the need based aid?
I’m not clear what you are asking. Schools do accept students and the financial aid package comes later…assuming you have completed all of the financial aid application materials.
Did you get accepted Early Action? Often these acceptances come early, but since they are not binding and matriculation decision is made by May…the financial aid offers come later.
Is that what you mean?
Or are you asking if a student can be accepted and not receive any financial aid at all?
I wish you could state your question a little more clearly.
Are you asking the same question as in one if your previous threads?
Since asking for financial aid has no bearing at all on being admitted…
At some schools, applying for need-based financial aid can have a bearing on being admitted (the amount of aid a school thinks the student needs may be a factor), and at other schools it makes no difference. We can better help you if you tell us what school or schools you are talking about.
…can the school still make an offer of admission without financial aid package although the student has already asked for the need based aid?
Of course. If the student asks for need-based aid as part of the application, the school can deny the financial aid but still make an offer of admission.
