-Plan on majoring in chemical or biomedical engineering
Thank You!

I’d go for it nevertheless! I know FIRST participation will give you a higher chance for scholarships. FLL and STEM camp mentor ship is also something a lot of people don’t have.

Vanderbilt: Reach

If you lean more towards biomedical engineering, try Harvard Engineering or Columbia Fu (if your Vanderbilt EFC is $2,000, then your Harvard/Columbia EFC is $2,000 or less), if you lean more towards chemical engineering, try UMinn-Twin Cities or Harvey Mudd. I wouldn’t be surprised if you got in at least one of the five…

And I forgot to mention, I am applying ED1. I visited and really liked the school so it’s my #1, but I’m just worried about getting it. Thanks for the replies!

I’m also applying ED to Vanderbilt! Your stats are a little better than mine though. I think you have a fair shot, but its so selective its hard to be sure! Don’t be crushed if you don’t get in, you’ll enjoy whatever excellent university you attend! Chance back?http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1685119-vandy-ed-and-others.html#latest

I think you have a pretty good shot of getting in, just make sure your essays are representative of who you are as a person. I’m also applying to Vandy ED1, so I definitely know the feeling of anxiousness. Good luck!! (:

I am a current Vanderbilt student. You definitely have a chance, but I cannot tell you that you will get in. If you can raise you ACT, I think you will absolutely get in. However, you have the best chance if you apply ED1.

lacsalltheway, do you think you could post your high school profile that got you accepted to Vandy? I just retook the ACT last Saturday so I’m hoping for a better score, but I’m not so sure with the math part.

I agree with Iacsalltheway-- definitely have a chance!! Chance me back? <a href=“GPA going to keep me out? - #3 by mnm111 - Chance Me / Match Me! - College Confidential Forums”>GPA going to keep me out? - #3 by mnm111 - Chance Me / Match Me! - College Confidential Forums;

I currently attend Vandy as well. Here are my stats from high school:

GPA: 3.97 unweighted, 4.50 weighted (though my school, 4.6 is the highest weighted GPA possible)
ACT w/ writing: 35 (perfect scores in science and reading)
All 4’s and 5’s on my AP Bio, Chem, Calc AB, Calc BC, APUSH, Lit and Comp, and Lang. and Comp
Also did IB and stuff

Look, while it’s all fine and dandy to have phenomenal scores and grades, what really matters is this: what makes you different from the rest of the group? All the students at Vandy are insanely capable to be here. But each person has his/her strength that really adds new and exciting diversity to the campus. You need to show an INITIATIVE that makes you unique and desirable.

As far as engineering goes, Vanderbilt is good, but not great. MIT, CalTech, GATech, and some schools with too much money (aka stanford, harvard, yale) will of course have very strong engineering programs. They are also looking for diversity too. You’ll still be extremely satisfied as an engineer here, but don’t forget to look at those tech schools. They might be more difficult, but if you’re not challenged immensely you will not be at the top for very long. Especially in an industry like engineering.

You have a good chance to get in. But really show why you’re valuable as a person. If you do that, I promise you, you will get in.

Does an increased interest in a foreign language count as something “unique.” Or is uniqueness conveyed through an essay?

I think you have a great chance, and I kind of envy you and I’m applying ED1 too!! Maybe we’ll be classmates
–Chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1686859-can-i-get-into-vanderbilt.html#latest

Update: ACT scores came out and I have 35 composite now! Does this change things?

Yeah your in.

Chancing back:

Great test scores, strong GPA, and decent extra-curriculars. I think you have a good shot at Vanderbilt (high match), as long as you work on the essays and letters of recommendation. Robotics seems like a big thing for you, so maybe elaborate on that in one of your essays.

Now you can try for Columbia Fu, Harvard SEAS, Stanford… and Vanderbilt is a high match.
