Can someone answer this?

I did the financial aid eligibility for san francisco state and this is what they said.

The following cost is based on your indication that you would be living on campus (residence hall) while attending San Francisco State University.

San Francisco State University — on campus (residence hall)

Estimated Cost of Attendance (COA) for 9-month academic year: $24,648
a. Estimated tuition and fees: $6,476
b. Estimated books and supplies: $1,860
c. Estimated room and board: $13,434
d. Estimated other expenses (Personal expenses, transportation, etc.): $2,878
Estimated total grant aid: $12,708
Estimated net price: (Cost of Attendance minus grant aid): $11,940

Total estimated financial assistance:
Estimated Federal Pell Grant Eligibility: $5,580
Estimated Cal Grant Eligibility: $1,656
Estimated State University Grant Eligibility: $5,472
Estimated Eligibility for Need-Based Student Loan: $3,500

Does this mean I’ll still have to take out a loan for the 2016-2017 school year? I know it’s just an estimate and it’s not set in stone but can you make an assumption for me?

Yes or get that $3500 from some other source. That is the gap they are projecting.

@lostaccount Oh, okay I thought they were just saying that I was eligible to take out $3500 in Loans. I thought the I would take the money from the Pell Grant, Cal Grant, and State Grant and put that towards the my estimated net price.

Your total grant aid is bout $12,500. Your cost of attendance is $24,000 or so.

You will need to fund the $11940 difference somehow. Part of that can be the $5500 Direct Loan…but that still leaves you with $7000 or so to come up with.

I think I am reading this correctly. Total, cost of attendance minus grant aid is $11940. Your financial aid is NOT funding that amount.

Can you pay $11940, or $7000? If that’s not affordable - then what will you do?

Did you ask your parents how much they can pay each year for 4 years?

Do you have a job/college savings?

Yes, you will put your Cal Grant, Pell Grant and other grant towards the price. But you can’t put it towards the “net price” because those grants will already be spent.

I think you misunderstood.

Your costs are about $24,000

Your grants are covering about $12,500

So, you’ll have about $11,000 left to pay. You can’t put the Pell and other grants towards that because those grants are part of the 12,500 that has already been applied (spent).

@Madison85 No, it’s not affordable, my mom makes about $29,000 a year and FAFSA said my EFC was 0. I don’t think my mom will be able to help out with this. I’ve been applying to many scholarships in hopes that something will come though. I think I will have to take out loans myself.

The student is getting almost full Pell, why not a higher Calgrant? Isn’t the Calgrant usually over $8,000 or does it depend on school attended?

@mom2collegekids I know I saw that later so I will have to figure out a way to cover that fee.

@mommdc I checked and this is what they said: “Cal Grants are up to $12,240 at a University of California campus, up to $5,472 at a California State University campus, and up to $9,084 at independent colleges has a GPA requirement.”. I have a Cal state GPA of 3.28/3.38 so I thought I would get more.

Did you use a Calgrant previously at a community college?

Are you a junior?

@mommdc No, I’m a Senior in High School. A first time freshman.

@ucbalumnus can probably explain this better.

The student might get a full Cal Grant that covers all of tuition. If so, then the CSU grant will decrease or go away.

Or the student is being given Cal Grant B, and is getting the CSU grant to cover tuition.

She wont’ be cheated if she qualifies for a Cal grant.

Sometimes we see estimates with a college grant, but then Cal Grant A is applied and the college grant goes away.
