i already asked this before and no one said anything.
I have just received another outside scholarship. i have already won one, and together they are worth $8000. However, since my family makes < 75k/yr, cornell has given me a full ride of grants, my parent contribution is $0, my student contribution is $2300, and my work study was $1800. i alreayd notified cornell of the first scholarship and they eliminated my work study and subtracted the other $1200 (of the $3000 scholarship) from the grant they gave me.

i have a crappy part time job and my pacheck is like $250/2 weeks, and i live on my own, apart from my parents. so i'm having trouble coming up with this $2300 this summer, and besides that its really annoying not being able to spend a dime on anything extra whatsoever. Cornell said if i am unable to come up with the student contribution this summer, I can fill out a Summer Savings Adjustment form, where they will convert what i couldnt ocme up with into either loans or work study. After that, will they work with me to have my grant monies returned to me in order to cover these? The woman i talked with said they could look into it if i filled out a Budget increase form for things like Health Insurance or a fitness card, but she didnt say anything about that.

Does anybody know what the Summer Savings Adjustment form entails? How hard it is to get one accepted, how long it takes to process?
Same with the Budget Increase Form, is that difficult/take long to process?
Will Cornell be easily willing to have my scholarships returned to me to cover these things since i have scholarships to replace them?
If i do fill out a Summer Savings form and they make me come up with work study/loans, will they do this first and then process returning my scholarships much later, forcing me to either take out a loan until it gets done or enroll in a work study program?

Should i decline my second scholarship ($5000)? If all these things i'm asking about are difficult to come by, then the scholarship could go to someone else who needs it more.

you will have to report that you worked in the summer…

subtract summer earnings from $2300…and thats what they can convert into loan/workstudy (i recommend loan)

they can also change your work study during the academic year into a loan (unsubsidized)

which means having money up front (although this year in particular finaid was tough)

the student health insurance plan must be paid for ahead of time (in august) so if you dont have family health then you will have to enroll in this…

do everything they tell you…since you are a “full ride” student cornell will not prevent you from attending classes since your grant will cover your debt…

i would ask how a scholarship (dont tell them you won it yet) will affect your finaid package…but i think a scholarship would be better than paying loans in the future…

I wouldn’t recommend taking out more loans. You’d have to pay it back later plus the interest that has accrued.

no what i’m saying is can my scholarships be given back ot me (because originally they’re just going to be deducted from the cornell grant) to cover those new loans! so having loans would be a nonissue

so you do have loans in your package? i’m confused

no, sorry its confusing. i have no loans in my package, but if i dont come up with the summer savings they will give me loans to replace them. by then, i would have already given them the scholarship i won and htey will have deducted it form the cornell grant .

if i let them know of hte scholarship now, they’ll deduct it from the grant NOW. since the SSA form isn’t til august, i’m wondering if they will give back the cornell grant they had originally given me and allow me to use the scholarship to cover these new loans

i would talk to the people who gave you the scholarship and tell them to hold your scholarship until you get your loans processed…

this is why i love scholarships that pay in cash ^_^

^ hey! thats a good idea! lol i wonder if they could do that. i didnt think about that at all and i was getting really stressed about this crap, especially since i called the cornell financial aid and the lady didnt have an answer to my question either and she said she’d see if a counselor could call me back.
