Can TAP Grant be used for Room and Board?

TAP doesn’t have any information online if it can be used for Room and board and other costs. Does anyone know if it can be used that way?

Which state?

New York, for a SUNY University

I don’t think so.

Call the school’s FA office. The one year I actually got TAP for my kids, because I had 2 in at once, it was just deducted from my total. I don’t think it was applied specifically to tuition vs. room and board but check with the school.

@techmom99, The NYS TAP (Tuition Assistance Program) grant is applied only to tuition. If OP qualifies for the Excelsior grant (the grant for families whose income is <$125k) it’s also only applied to tuition – not fees or room and board – and it’s applied after the TAP grant. So if OP gets the full TAP grant, they won’t get much Excelsior at all. If full TAP covers all of tuition, they won’t get any Excelsior.

@SRM2442, Do you qualify for Pell? That and the ~$5500/year federal.student loan can be used for room, board, fees, and books.

TAP can only be used for tuition. Room and board are not Qualified Educational Expenses.
