I'm waiting for my U of M decision, but I applied ED to Carnegie Mellon as well.
Can Michigan know what other schools I applied to and etc?
If so, that's a really bad news for me..
just wondering

Thanks.

They were both through Common Application

Are you asking this because you think you’re not allowed to apply ED to CMU and EA to Mich? B/c you are.

No. I’m asking this because if they know I applied ED somewhere else, they are less likely to accept me.
Does anyone know?

“I’m asking this because if they know I applied ED somewhere else, they are less likely to accept me”

Who on earth told you that?

you’re pretty screwed for applying to other schools while you applied ED at CMU.
You should just pray that CMU doesn’t find out about your unethical behavior.

^…it doesn’t matter if its early action…

It’s common sense. Colleges don’t want students to get accepted then go to another school because that will hurt their enrollment rate. That’s why people with really high scores sometimes not get accepted.
So what I was asking was this: “Will the University of Michigan know I applied ED at CMU?” I’m worried because I used the Common App for both applications and I’m not sure how much info they see.
I’m not asking if I can apply or not. I already did.

You are allowed to apply non-restrictive EA and ED to schools; however, you can only apply ED to one school and are required to attend if you get in. So there is no legal/ethical trouble at all for doing EA to uMich and ED to CMU.

Likewise, I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that Mich knows, but it really shouldn’t affect your chances anyway.

To the OP - - It would not make sense for Michigan to use this info against you even if it did know – because it won’t know if CMU accepted you or not. In the event you weren’t accepted ED at CMU, and if you’re a desirable candidate, then Michigan would have wanted to have made you an acceptance offer. Truthfully, their yield rate is pretty low anyway – I can’t see in this case that same would prevent them from honestly assessing your candidacy. So don’t worry!

Schools cannot see anything from the Common App except what is submitted to THEM. That is the “main part of the app” and the supplement for that school. They cannot check if you claimed that 3 different schools are all you number one choice in your supplements. Seriously, that just doesn’t make sense. So NO school can tell where else you applied, let alone where you applied ED.

Regarding the ethics of this - of course you are supposed to apply to more schools than the one you applied ED to. The ethical part comes into play if you are ACCEPTED ED to a school. At that time, you are required to withdraw your application from all other schools.

Some schools don’t even release ED decisions until January (especially ED 2). Certainly, those kids are not expected to put all their eggs in one basket and then just take a year off if they don’t get into their ED school.

Thanks. This is what I wanted to know.
