Private universities usually require transfers to stay a minimum of two years to graduate, but what about the UC's? Can we get our diplomas as soon as we complete university, college, and department degree requirements?

Yes. Theoretically, you can graduate in 1 year.

yes, good luck, it’s hard.

plan on taking classes both summer terms and having everything planned out perfectly.

also, it depends on your major.

I’m taking 6 summer courses this summer and whatever else I need to next summer in order to graduate in one year.

I think/hope so!
I mean, say you come on with what is it? 105 quarter units (70 semester) being the top they can give you?
Wouldn’t that automatically chop off a quarter?

it’d chop off a quarter, yes.

the issue is that sometimes courses aren’t always offered every term.

so in the end, it really depends on your major

Thanks for the replies, guys.

@Grimes99 Where are you taking those summer courses?

I have a few questions: How many courses do students usually take per quarter at UCLA? Would taking three history courses and a foreign language course per quarter be manageable? If we graduate in Fall 2011, when do we attend the graduation ceremony?

16 units is the “expected” load that the UCs want you to take to graduate on time.

If you graduate in Fall 2011, you participate in Spring 2012 commencement. If you graduate in Summer 2011, you participate in Spring 2011.

@ioi: I’m taking mine at UCSD. The counselor said not to take any more than 3 per session… and even that is going to be tough.

Grimes- I want to do the same thing, how many units per quarter you plan on taking?

Ideally I want to take 20 per quarter (after the summer.) If I take 24 total units this summer (12 per session) that would put me at 84 units, which means I could definitely get done next summer.

I’m sorry but I’m not familiar with the UC system (yet). Isn’t 16 units a lot for a summer session? I’m not a nerd but I do try to balance out school work, work, and social life. By taking that many units, do you have time for other things? Or it it study, study, study…

yes grimes, BUT not everything works like that. Especially when dealing with specialty upper division courses

example given, for my major at UCI, I have to take Econ105A-B-C(and stats 100 A-B-C) and then 123 A-B
105A is offered only in the fall, B only in the winter and C only in spring and I need to finish all of Econ105(and Stats100) before I can take 123A and then B. Basically, for me there’s nothing I could do, the earliest I can get out is in 1.6 years. It’s not so bad though.

also, a lot of UCs have added on a unit cap. so you can’t always take as many as you’d like

Oh I know, I’m speaking ideally. My plan is contingent upon those classes being available. But I have a lot of friends at UCSD and the unit cap is above 20. I think it’s 22 per quarter.

And yeah 16/24 units is a ton for summer, but I’ll strictly be studying my ass off.
