Hi all,

I am a rising senior beginning my college search. I was wondering whether a 2330 SAT and a 4.0 UW GPA (mostly honors and AP classes, some regular) would be able to guarantee me admission into UCSD? Or should I look at other schools as safeties? I live in California.

Thanks.

What’s your intended major? My son has similar stat as yours, and he considered UCSD as a target school.

@StevenToCollege Thanks for your fast response. Chemistry or computer science. I might go in undecided. I may want to do pre-med and that’s why I like UCSD.

OP, there’s a chances forum for just your question. Try over there.

^^ I agree with StevenToCollege. You have excellent test score and GPA; but UCSD can no longer be considered a safety school even with steller scores like that. The competitiveness of college admission has become so intense in the UC system that in-state applicants really have no guarantee to get admission to any top UCs even with high test scores and GPA. Without knowing your other stats. I’d say UCSD is a target school for you, not a safety.

I think you’re probably in, but I also know that those are two of the most “impacted” departments at UCSD.

Unfortunately, the UC system has very little in the way of Early Action (although I understand there are a few special notifications to CA residents), which makes them a little dicey as safeties (apart from UC Riverside’s guarantee program). The ideal safety is one with either rolling admissions or non-binding Early Action, so that you’ll know you’re in before the application deadlines for other colleges.

I agree with theluckystar. Match maybe.

I have similar stats as you do and consider it a “likely”.

Thanks everyone!

What about USC, if I have triple legacy? (parents, aunt)

You definately have a good shot at USC with those stats, especially for a legacy applicant. But, USC’s admit raite is still only ~17-18%. Don’t be surprised if you’re rejected. There’s a good thread in the USC forum about “What are my chances at USC???”

Be sure to do well on the essays .

“Good Shot” and 17-18% admit rate? Really?

Did you see the OP’s stats? He’s also a triple legacy, and so - yes - I’d say the odds are pretty solid for acceptance.

UCSD is not a safety even with your stats, if you believe what people posted on CC, last year there was a kid with similar stats and he were rejected at all three UCs, UCLA, UCB, UCSD. I wouldnt’ apply to CS, it’s very impacted major and that makes it less of a target.

Thank you everyone!! I guess the search continues- I think I’ll apply to UCSC as well.

@DrGoogle - could you link me to a post? I couldn’t find one when I searched. I’d like to compare my extracurriculars to his.

@DrGoogle whoops, I meant the guy who got rejected from UCB, UCLA, UCSD, sorry about that!

You should apply to 3-4 campuses. You may be able to receive Regents Scholarship.
