Can we talk to the B and C students about college?

Congrats to your daughter @mstee !

Funny, isn’t it, how that #2 choice can jump up to #1 when they offer money and a nice early acceptance??

@bjkmom: your son seems so level-headed. :slight_smile:
If it’d been a “top choice school” of his, I’m sure he’d have been upset though… who needs tha aggravation when the period is tense enough!
Remember last year when MIT sent out “you’re in” emails to hundreds of kids who HADN’T been admitted?
@mstee: congratulations to your daughter!

Would you mind sharing the names of the universities? It may be useful to the B/C students out there. Or their parents currently pulling their hair out, thinking they’ll never get into any college.

Yes, DD has been accepted (rolling admissions) to Temple Japan, Loyola New Orleans, Eckerd and Gustavus Adolphus. She was deferred from Tulane. I believe she is still waiting to hear from two more schools, not sure if that will be anytime soon, or closer to April 1. She had more schools on her list to apply to, but is ready to quit now, and be done with this!

@mstee that’s awesome!! I’ve heard good things about Loyola New Orleans; it’s produced musicians such as G-Eazy and Harry Connick, Jr. Idk if she’s going for music, but it’d still be great to be in the company of some famous alumni.

Gustavus Adolphus and Eckerd are wonderful schools (A+ schools for B students) and I’ve heard very good things about Loyola New Orleans. What great choices!
(I admit not knowing Temple Japan, but would assume your child is into Japanese, calligraphy, anime…)

My son is in to Alfred State (SUNY), Keystone (PA) and St. Thomas Aquinas (NY).

He didn’t get into the MA College of Liberal Arts - but it’s a great choice for NY kids. They give a SUBSTANTIAL discount to kids from NY, making it pretty much equivalent in price to a SUNY school. It’s about half an hour from Albany.

I’ll hold off on the name of the school that had the admissions hiccup.

Thank you.
Congratulations to your son!
I’ll look into Keystone in PA, which I don’t know, and the info about MCLA for NYS residents who read this thread. Thank you so much for the info!

I found out a few days ago that DD was also accepted to Willamette, with $$. Actually, all of her acceptances except Temple Japan have come with some $$. So she has some nice choices now. She had been planning to apply to maybe 3 or 4 more schools, but has decided that she has enough to think about and is probably not going to apply to anymore. We are planning to visit all but Temple Japan before she makes up her mind. Loyola is still her favorite of the acceptances here in the U.S. because she is in love with New Orleans. But we shall see. I feel good about all of her choices. So glad I posted about her situation a few months back on CC – Willamette, Loyola, and Eckerd were all suggested by fellow CC’ers, and all seem like fine matches for her interests, as does Gustavus, but it, unfortunately, doesn’t meet one of her top criteria which is it needs to be in a place that is warmer than Minnesota, so it is going to have to be most impressive to overcome that.

Yay, another acceptance! Nichols in MA.

So far, that’s 4 acceptances, 1 rejection, 4 still waiting.

CONGRATULATIONS to all for their acceptances.

Congratulations!
How are things shaping up as far as finances go? That’s another issue for B and C students - they often don’t have access to merit scholarships and the colleges that admit them typically don’t meet need.

Keystone offered him $8500 so far.

Not much from the rest; we’ll hold tight and see what the spring brings.

But he didn’t apply to any over-the-top financially schools. Not that we can afford full price anywhere, but none of the schools has one of those $60K price tags.

In yet another twist, the conversation in the car today:

“So, mom, I was thinking of going to (our local community college.) It would be cheaper, I could keep my job, and Mike and Nick are going there. And after 2 years I could transfer and go away to school. Oh, and I’m thinking of changing my major to criminal justice. I filled out the application after school.”

Response: “Oh, OK, honey. Let’s see how it goes.”

All options are still on the table. We’ll see where his head is when numbers come in, and when it’s time to decide.

Parenting is most definitely NOT for the weak of heart!

err, I would strongly advise NOT criminal justice, unless his goal is to become a corrections officer/police officer.
If he’s undecided, he should go as “undecided”.
but conversations in the car = good

…or FBI Agent!

I read somewhere that the FBI use to (probably still do) send a lot of their agents to CUNY John Jay College of Criminal Justice for “advance” training.

Yes, but not as their basic training… Basics require a major in a technical field and/or experience and/or foreign language proficiency and/or accounting + solid physical qualities.

Well I made an account just for this discussion, it’s still winter break at my university. I was a B/C student in high school. I was bullied a lot and severely unhappy the majority of my grade school career. So grades weren’t really on my mind until senior year. I applied to 4 schools and planned to possibly attend my local community college. I was accepted to three and wait-listed at one. My current university is seen as an “safety” and as a “backup”. Which I won’t deny, the acceptance rate at my school is a lot higher compared to other schools.

My school is Radford University and I highly recommend it to anyone! I’ve been very happy and my regional school has helped me immensely. I’m a senior now and I’ve gained a lot by attending my school. I’ve had the same internships of students who went to William and Mary, Roanoke College, etc. Sure my school isn’t as shiny in name but I worked my butt off and proved I can just be as successful as the other interns. Professors have always taught my classes and all of the geology faculty know my face/name.

I’m not sure if my school will ever be as respected as the other universities but that doesn’t bother me. I’m hoping to head off to grad school this coming fall. I may have applied to more universities if I was going to go back in time, but I don’t regret anything. So B/C students your life doesn’t end because of grades, you are just going down a different path!

Btw if anyone is interested in my high school background here it is:

2.99 GPA
Thespian (Honorary Drama Geek)
Three AP Classes ( B in Government, B in Environmental Science, D in Art History)
Full Pay Student

Schools I Applied Too:
Old Dominion University (Accepted)
Radford University (Accepted)
Virginia Common Wealth University (Wait-Listed)
George Mason University (Accepted)

Welcome, @FluentInCarbs ! (I love your user name, too! )
Congrats on your success in college, and it’s great that it happened to end up being a great fit for you as well!

@BeeDAre Thanks! I’m sure carbs will be my downfall eventually ha. While some may think because we are a regional university we will have less opportunities, it’s actually been the opposite in my program. We don’t have a masters or a PhD in geology so all the undergrads get a chance at research. A lot of my friends have presented at Geological Society of America Conferences and many of us go off to grad school.

I’m very unfamiliar with the other majors at my university so I’m not sure everyone’s experiences will be the same as mine. I know nursing and teacher education are huge programs here. We also are getting new science buildings, I’m super excited about! I’m going to be very sad to leave Radford, I hope to live nearby someday!

I like this thread!

I have a mostly B student (3.45)/30 ACT, only two APs, some discipline issues and few ECs. I was initially very discouraged about the application process when I first started looking at CC last year. She got her first acceptance in December (on her birthday!) to Univ. of Minnesota Twin Cities, which is probably the highest ranked school she applied to and it was just such a relief. The girl is freezing cold when its under 70 degrees and has never set foot in Minnesota, but at least she’s definitely going to college! We’re going to do a visit during spring break.

She has some acceptances from Cal State schools (SDSU, Humboldt) and pending applications at Cal Poly Pomona, Colo State, Eckerd and Indiana - Bloomington (still trying to decide if she’ll apply to any school that’s within driving distance from home (Virginia)
