What happened to all the "B" students?

I love the CC forum and find it interesting and informative. At the same time, I feel it addresses only the elite and very top students. I'm wondering where's the help for the more average student? When I went to college a high school average of a B or an 85 was still considered O.K. I myself, had a B average and it got me into the University of Wisconsin. My husband, who suffered from undected ADD, had a C average and was admitted and attended Lehigh, (he did score unusually high on the SAT's, and I'm sure that is what helped him get in). With our lowly "B" and "C" averages, my husband and myself would never get accepted into the schools we proudly graduated from. What happens to the average kids of today? Are they relegated to third tier and community colleges? This is not a hypothetical question. I currently have twins who are now in the 10th grade. They are very good students but frankly, when I read about the kids on CC, I get scared and sad for my children. With the stellar grades and long list of accomplishments that the typical student on this forum posesses, they seem to be one step away from curing cancer or finding the secret to longevity. I don't need or care if my kids match up to this or even go to the Ivies. I just want them to have the full and wonderful academic experience I had in college. I feel that in the present day we're living in, this is going to be very hard to accomplish.

well, there are still plenty of B students. If you're literally asking where they go, I'm sure many of them go to state university or some private universities with high acceptance rates.

I'm one of the more normal kids (3.7 GPA, 1950 SAT) and so far, I've gotten into four schools, 3 with significant merit scholarships. There are plenty of schools who would happily take in the B student...you just have to look for them.

I'm a B student, and I was going to go to a State University but have chosen on a more selective private college. There are plenty of colleges out there, it doesn't have to be the top 100 to be a good school.

3.7 is a B student?

Not the GPA itself, but the transcript was far from unblemished including not taking the hardest courseload, repeating a class, a few Cs, etc.

I think a lot of the B students are scared of coming here because they fear embarassment. I'd say that I am above average, but when people here list their accomplishments, they make what I have accomplished seem like nothing. I suppose, too, that not everyone takes college research seriously, and it is more likely that a GPA\SAT freak would come here than the average B student. Please understand, that if this post seems arrogant, it was not meant to be.

Wheatie,

no need to worry--of the 2000+ colleges in the US, it's only 100 or so that are highly selective and turning away solid B students.

In addition, two other factors are at work in the phenomenon you observe: grade inflation (many B students a generation ago would be A/A- students today); the baby boom "echo" (the peak comes in two years, when the number of students graduating high school will likely begin to decline and hopefully, admissions will begin to become less of a seller's market).

A 3.7 GPA with a 1950 SAT is hardly normal. The average SAT is in the 1500's and I can tell you at most schools a 3.7 is pretty far off from average.

I'm a B student, 3.7 GPA with 1700 PSAT:)
I also wanted to ask before where was a College Confidential B Student version was..:D

There is something else that I have figured out as well as the parent of a high school senior attempting to get into great schools without phenomenal stats...20 years ago, when I graduated from college, if one parent of each student had a college degree that was something. It was highly unusual that both of the student's parents went to college. Nowadays, it seems as though most kids who are applying to college have BOTH parents who are college graduates. What that means is, kids today have TWO people who understand what it takes to get into college, and know how to steer them in the right direction while in high school by pushing them into AP and honors courses, etc, lots of ECs, the whole 9 yards. When I was a high school senior, my parents didn't even know what an AP course was...All of this makes for a much more competitive environemnt today.

I'm a B student, 3.98+2400 (10 essay, OUCH). I have two Bs on my transcript :o

^ That's exactly what we don't need to be hearing. That's not a B student. ;) I've gotten Bs too, but I'm not a "B student"...most kids here aren't, and I can see why that may appear to be worrisome.

In fact, I'm B student. I have an average GPA of 3.24.

PS. I can sign autograph to anyone, no problem.

er im a B student, but i have a 2400 and 800's on sat ii's.......................

..............

Right here. 3.33 gpa, 1700 SATs, no awards, no NHS, no leadership. :)

I'm a B student. 3.3 GPA

There are plenty of good colleges that B students can go to :)

89 here... 90.5 weighted. But 2120 SAT.

I'm a B average student.
I cringe everytime someone posts something like, "omg i got 1 B! can I still get into a good school?!!?!?!?!"

I'm, a B student and I got like 1160 on the SAT's so I guess im stupid compared to CC standards and
NoFX : I agree it drives me nuts!
