Many kids have multiple offers. Come the time when we need to send in acceptance letter/email, can you accept more than one just in case some circumstances might change from April to the time ready for school?

Shouldn’t you think about those kids who don’t get off waiting lists because you are holding multiple spots just on case?

I do not if it’s possible or not but I would say it is highly unethical.

This is what my daughters new college has to say about this:

“By placing an enrollment deposit, you are making a commitment to (college) that you will accept our offer of admission and make a deposit at only one institution. If it is discovered that a candidate has made deposits at more than one institutuion, admission to both institutions may be rescinded.”

Keep in mind that you must also send an official final transcript as proof of successfully completing high school. Your high school is only send out a transcript to one school, leaving you unable to register at the other.

I totally agree with the above posters. By sending in your deposit, it is a moral and sometimes legal committment to attend the college. Double depositing is highly unethical.

I guess I don’t understand the need to do that in the first place. What are you expecting to change between May and August?

Can you be engaged to 2 people at the sametime?

sometimes large outside scholarships are not announced until later in the year. That may be a deciding factor for some people. Not that I agree with admission to two schools, but I have had 2 conversations with other parents about this. I am talking 10-20 thousand/ year scholarships; not the one time $1000 ones.

My company offers generous scholarships, but doesn’t award them until sometime in June. I can understand how that could be the deciding factor for a student and how they may want to keep their options open until the award is announced. I think in that case I would contact the 2 schools (presumably it’s narrowed down that far) and see if it would be OK to hold both spots.

Thank you for all your replies so far.

Another related question is what to do if the student comes off the waitlist? We were told that the school will inform us after May 1st. By then, we have already submitted our acceptance to another school. How do you accept the new one if that is a better choice?

(I am 1st generation immigrant. Never had any experience or knew enough to ask these questions before. My questions may seem questionable to some of you, but it does not mean I am looking for unethical actions. I am simply asking what is the appropriate thing to do.)

After receiving I-20 from an institution, is there anything more pending from our side?
