Can you appeal?

I am wondering if there is a way to appeal a denial to Notre Dame for transfer admissions if i truly feel i have the credentials for admittance.??

Does anyone know?

I can give stats and maybe you can see if i am just chasing nothing, but i think i am in the ballpark for it.

Yeah, stats plz.

ok -

1st semester sophomore.
gpa - 3.6 - 3.96 - 3.84
ACT - 27
HS GPA - 3.3ish
College EC - Club Water Polo and Club Rowing - Resident Hall Association ( 2 position on boards - one for dorm, one for Student Gov't)
Campus Leader for the organization ONE
Volunteer rowing coach for the past 4 years
volunteer water polo coach last summer
major at Former school (Western Michigan University) - Business/political science
minor - Biochemistry

Applied to the Program of Liberal Studies and Political Science Programs (want peace studies)

I'm sorry, but I think you're chasing nothing here.

Really??!?

that sucks, i really thought i would have been a great candidate - i know a lot of people that got in as a transfer with lower stats as me - and i am legacy

But even if i got in - i am not sure if i would go - i have a near full ride with FinAid and Academic scholarships to UMich which i was accepted as a transfer for next semester...

Regardless - does anyone know what one would have to do to file an appeal??

usually you need to feel that there has been some sort of irregularity in your application to a given school...if you were simply denied when you feel that you should have been accepted, im not sure if this is a valid reason for appeal...perhaps you could call them up when they re-open...but it certainly seems that youre in a good situation at umich with nearly a full ride

yeah, it is the feeling that i really want to go there - and really i wont hurt myself in appealing... My parents and numerous individuals which go there now are quite discouraged b/c they see me as fit for being accepted. I am going to call when they reopen and see what the major pitfall in my application was and go from there.

My concern is they may not have actually received/reviewed my grades. i sent them to ND on the 23rd and i heard on the 26th.... now i know they closed on the 24th and have not opened since then. so idk - but if they were waiting on my grades and a 3.84 was not good enough i would like to know what is. I will admit i got a B - in my 450 political theory course - all A's in my other courses, the 450 was my only non-honors class so idk.

snwrider, you got into Michigan though right? just go there UMich is an excellent school!

btw i got in for winter 09 too, just admitted really really late.

Nice congrats on that.... I am pumped for UMICh though - i have a lot of friends there - more at ND, but there are 30K+ at umich so i'm sure i'll manage... but ND has been a dream for me since i was born... like i think the hat that i had on when my first pic was taken actually was an ND one... pathetic but still, go figure with Catholics.

Regardless though, if i was denied for some redic reason i will appeal and if i get in it will depend on how much cash they give me and if i get a dorm... 50K is extreme...

does anyone know the logistics for an appeal?

have you tried contacting your regional rep? you can find who it is on the ND website... shoot them an email or phone call

You can not appeal at private colleges. What you can do is have your alumni parent call and ask why you were rejected, they'll be honest.

I now know you can appeal. A family friend is a priest their and former prof and he stated there is a procedure for appeals which sometimes require meeting with a review board. But by the time that could happen i will be into my second or 3rd week at UMich. So idk if it'll be even worth it, i would like to know why i was denied though - i thought my stats made me near the upper tier of those who could be admitted.

do i sense any degree of dissent in that comment?? haha

Has anyone ever heard of someone getting in on appeal? I haven't.

Get your grades up and try again.

a 3.84 is too low with the stats and EC's i have??? I mean i i had 20, 20, and 17 credit hours the last 3 semesters - all classes but 3 transfer and i have fulfilled 1st year of study requirements.

so idk what could be holding me back. a 3.6, 3.9, 3.8 with a double major in business/polisci and minor in biochem seems pretty damn good to me??!?

I said in my essay that although i am in the business program i no longer wanted to do it and was specific to polisci. so there wasn't a chance that i was going to do a inter-college transfer. i just cant seem to understand what my pitfall is...

Why you didn't get in: Other people were better. Deal with it.

^^not necessary

there could be a variety of reasons you didnt get in...your grades are there...maybe your essays werent as good as many others...mind you most people spend hours and hours writing the best essay they can so the level of writing is pretty high....or maybe you did write a convincing essay...don't know...i think you may be getting a little bit too worked up about it...you werent even sure if you wanted to go in the event you were accepted and your going to a fantastic school now with a great reputation and social enviornment...transferring is often times a very taxing process anyways

best

That is always a possibility... I am not so much worked up about it as i am slightly discouraged that i got into UMich without even sending in grades for this semester and getting denied from ND, but at the same time i know of other individuals who have been accepted and have much lower stats then i.

IDK, hopefully i will know this week why i was denied and just go from there. But i already bought my books for UMIch so i'm happy either way

Snwrider, your current school is not at the level of ND academically, so the gpa might not be looked upon as highly as even a lower gpa from a school like UM. Your ACT is low for ND (I know kids with 31's who weren't accepted). Your essays may or may not have been at the top of the heap. Your need for financial aid may be a factor. There are many possible reasons you were not accepted. ND is extremely difficult to get into. Only a very small number of qualified student are admitted. That's how elite admissions work.

You are extremely fortunate to receive scholarships at UM as a transfer. My D's friend had a 32 ACT, was val at a top Catholic prep school, had leadership positions & varsity sports ... and only got a token scholarship as a freshman. If I were you, I'd be grateful for the opportunity UM is giving you. Move on. Enjoy Ann Arbor.

anyone else??? i have sent them an email but they are on break till the 5th, when i go back to AA. so it's a waiting game but i'd like to know.

Kelsmom - although i know WMU is not a ND/UM caliber of school, my issue is that i sent my grades in on the 20th, a saturday and they were closed then. so my feeling is they could have made a decision before my grades were received since the letter i received was dated on the 22nd... and also i know students who were accepted from Holy Cross from indiana with lower stats then i have across the board. i can say for a fact that WMU has far better academics then HCC. I really just want to know if they give me a legitimate reason for a denial - maybe there is some unknown thing on my record that i can explain. and as expected my family is quite upset - primarily bc i was denied and secondly bc i am going to UM - not that UM is bad, i really like the school a lot and the kids there too - but when you have parents and grandparents who are quite involved in notre dame and even with a 3.84 from the WMU Honors College and an athlete i am still denied. at times it is discouraging...
