I applied to the CALS School of Environmental Engineering
^How competitive are admissions to the Environmental Engineering program?

I am a South Korean Male residing in Michigan
Northville High School. Public School-fairly large class (506 graduating)
Ranked as #5 in Michigan and i believe 217 in the US
3.83/4.0 GPA Unrounded (A- counts as 3.5)
3.95/4.0 GPA Rounded (A- is rounded up to A)
No official rank given. Definitely top 5%

I know State universities generally round grades to the nearest solid. CALS is a contract college, so I'm not sure how they'll see my gpa.

34 ACT on single exam.

7 Honors Classes taken throughout high school

other AP classes taken:
AP World History
AP Psychology
AP Calculus
AP Microeconomics
AP Macroeconomics
AP Environmental Science
AP Spanish
AP Literature
AP Language

General ECs:
National Honors Society
Volunteer work through city programs
Church Youth Group
I work at Abercrombie as a part time employee

ECs that I think make me stand out a bit:
Division 1 Regional Finalist Track and Field Varsity Athlete (Every year of high school)
Founder and President of my school's Recycling Club
Officer of Martial Arts Club
Volunteer at Special Olympics-Michigan Chapter
6 Years of Violin, Orchestral Experience

Special Talents:
Fluently Bilingual
Nice Smile
Great Shower Singer

That's all for now. Please give me a realistic chance, even if I won't like what you tell me. Thanks for your time!

you raise a good point. As far as I know, the BEE program is jointly offered by CALS and COE, and the major requirements are essentially identical. The only thing I’m not too sure about how the core requirements differ (I’m in CAS), more specifically whether you’ll be required to complete the Eng math sequence. Sorry for the digression, but from what I understand you’re essentially an engineer.

Frankly speaking, applying through CALS is most likely a smart choice since you wouldn’t benefit from COE’s efforts to recruit more women nor whatever URM policies Cornell has set in place.

Haha well that’s fortunate. CALS’s other majors were appealing to me too. It was difficult to pick but I decided Environmental Engineering was the best fit for me. At that point, I wasn’t even considering the competitiveness of individual schools within Cornell, but apparently, CALS doesn’t discriminate as much, and it’s also cheaper- even if just marginally. I guess everything worked out for the better then. Thanks for your advice. Your candid approach was refreshing too

Also, will it negatively impact me if I didn’t send in my SAT II Scores?

I believe I was 790 on math 1 and 800 Korean with listening. I thought math 1 would be trivial with my ACT math score and my math courses/grades, and Korean w/L’ isn’t very impressive for a Korean National

Chance me please.
By the way, the breakdown of my ACT is 36 Reading, 35 English, 34 Math, and 32 Science if that matters.

My SAT Reading+Math was 1550/1600.

Even if I didn’t send in any subject test scores (CALS doesn’t require them), is there still a decent chance of acceptance? I’m extremely worried now, and I would appreciate any input at all

We would not know because we have not been in this situation before. If I were you, I would just contact the admissions office and ask these questions.

If your smile is nice enough for Cornell, then I think that you have a pretty good chance. However, don’t get too excited. There are plenty of people out there with BETTER smiles and a better singing ability in the shower.

Seriously, your chances are OK but you’re not a guaranteed acceptance.
