Can you compare U of Alabama and U of Arkansas?

I would like to some info about the similarities and differences between U of Arkansas and U of Alabama from informed posters. My son, who would be in the honors program at either school, and is double majoring in accounting and English, is interested. Helpful comparisons would include the honors programs, majors, campus atmosphere, and scholarships. He is not National Merit, so would not qualify for those scholarships. The U of Arkansas board doesn’t get much action, so I posted here. He is concerned that he would like an English program that includes reading of classic lit on the level of the Iliad in the form of entire books, not just anthologies. He wants to read a broad variety of lit, so doesn’t want to major in classics.

UArk is in a more rural setting, is that correct? Is there much to do off-campus?

Bama is in a good-sized city (about 90,000-100,000 people).

43% of freshmen at Bama are from Out of State.

Bama is ranked #79

UArk is ranked #132

Here’s a link to Bama’s English offerings for** Fall 2010**. Of course, courses that are only offered in the Spring won’t be listed here.

There are also Honors College offerings that might interest your son. Again, some spring courses won’t be listed. You’ll need to scroll down to get to the Fall offered honors courses.

What are your son’s stats?

I think a college visit is really needed.

Lovestheheat- I, and others I’m sure, would be happy to answer questions about AR in the University of Arkansas thread too- I don’t want to intrude on Bama territory over here!
Bottom line though- both great schools with different strengths and atmospheres. Visit both if at all possible.

Mom2- Good advice on the visits! UArk is in Fayetteville, AR, a beautiful little college town of about 74,000 people in a metro area of about 460,000. It’s different from Tuscaloosa, but you wouldn’t be short on things to do. I don’t know where people keep getting this idea it’s in the middle of a pasture. (Although, NCES did have it incorrectly classified as rural for several years.)

Thank you to both of you. Mom2collegekids, I ws looking for those exact schedules and couldn’t find them on the U of A website. Thank you! They were both very impressive, by the way.

mmcnell- If you can answer some of the comparison questions, I would love to hear from you. What are the different strengths of the schools? Or would it be better for me to ask you to compare them on the U of Ark. forum?

I think the U of Ark forum would be ideal just so anyone else watching that forum could chime in too. I know there are a few others that keep up with things over there and they can probably provide input on things I may be out of the loop on by now.

Lovestheheat…

I don’t think many of us can really give you a fair comparison without having actually visited both schools…and I doubt many have investigated both schools. And, without having actually visited both schools, you’re just going to get “partisan” responses.

I think you and your son have to visit Bama. The school sells itself.

I can add that a friend of my D’s narrowed down his choices to Arkansas and Alabama, and in the end he chose Bama :)

As the others have said, you really should visit both campuses and see which feels right for your son.

24-20

:p

LOL,
Roll Tide

Siglio…very good.

I don’t know where to get any state by state distribution for UArk…but I would imagine that Bama has a more OOS students and students from states that don’t touch Ark.

mmcnell - I started a simlar thread on the U of Arkansas forum if you would are to post over there

*I don’t know where to get any state by state distribution for UArk…but I would imagine that Bama has a more OOS students and students from states that don’t touch Ark. *

Ooops …I didn’t word that right.

What I meant to write is…Bama has many OOS students from states that don’t touch Alabama’s boundaries. I don’t think UArk has many OOS students from states that don’t touch Arkansas.

I would say that Bama is more cosmopolitan.

Like Alabama, Arkansas is known in the south as a football school. A friend of ours did happen to visit UArk when checking out colleges and was really impressed with it. He liked the honors program and the engineering program, and was very impressed with the university. I do not personally know anything about the school, as I’ve never visited, and just know of the Razorbacks playing in the Sugar Bowl on occasion. But I am not surprised to hear that it is an up and coming school. I remember my friend saying that the WalMart guy seemed to have donated a lot of money to the school and encouraged the academics there. It wouldn’t hurt to check it out.

I’ve seen the northwest Arkansas region mentioned in many “best places to yada yada” material.

i think of arkansas as a big science and engineering school for some reason…their architecture school is well known
