Can you do aerospace with an ME degree?

I'm interested in doing aerospace engineering but Columbia SEAS doesn't offer it, someone told me that an ME was similar (enough) and could be applied to aerospace.
Is this true or false?

I'm also interested in doing robotics; is ME correct for that as well? I was told EE is better for robotics, but I really dislike EE, thus far and am trying to avoid taking it if possible.

Also, I'm more interested in the hands-on aspect of engineering, again, this is best with ME?

You can get a job in the aerospace industry with several different engineering degrees, including ME, MSE, EE, Aero and many others. You may not be doing exactly the same work (but if there are any aero type classes at your school you can take you very well could end up doing the same work) but you can get a job in industry. I don’t really know anything about robotics.

By percentages, there are actually more MEs at places like Boeing or Lockheed than there are Aero’s. It all just depends on what area of ME you focus on, and what you want to do in the aerospace industry.

A lot of schools do not offer an Aerospace Engineering degree, so Mechanical Engineers are often found working in the field. My school will start offering an AE curriculum next year and, from what I can see, a lot of the courses offered are the same than in ME. You won’t have trouble finding work in the aerospace industry with a ME degree.

As for robotics, ME can work in the field as well… but of course robotics is pretty much a mix of ME and EE, so if you absolutely despise EE, it might not be the best suited field for you. Just out of curiosity though, what kind of EE classes have you taken? It’s a vast discipline with a wide array of subjects, so maybe your hate for EE is due to the classes you have taken.

For instance, I’m a third year EE student and frankly, I dislike about half of the classes I’ve taken so far. Power engineering classes are the ones that really interest me, but I couldn’t care less about signal analysis, to be honest.

Yeah robotics/controls is really a EE topic, although the undergrad robotics course in my school is cross-listed under CS/GE/ME as well.

I’m also curious, why have you ruled out EE?
