Can you double major in two different schools?

My son applied for computer science in the Watson School. He is interested in double majoring in business. Is this possible? He didn't put this on his application. I know business is another school. Thanks for any input.

Yes this is possible. It is called a dual-degree program meaning that he will get a degree from each of the two schools. Its different than a double major where you are taking 2 majors within the same school. If and when your son is admitted he should speak to the advisor for the school he is accepted to, and they can discuss this as an option further. He would need to fill out this form http://www2.binghamton.edu/admissions/pdf/application-forms/intrauniversity-transfer-or-double-degree-application.pdf</a> to make the request.

just fyi – to do a dual degree, you generally need to complete 156 credits, which is significantly more than is needed for a single degree. he should carefully look at the requirements for both programs, as well as the general education requirements, to see what would be involved in trying to complete both programs of study. (meeting with advisers from the schools can help him evaluate this).

also – both som and watson offer programs for students in other schools who want to take a course of study in their school without doing a full major – see –
[Binghamton University - Academics: Schools and Colleges: School of Management: Current Students: Undergrad: Programs: Opportunities for Non-SOM Students](http://www2.binghamton.edu/som/curstudents/undergrad/programs/opportunities.html) regarding management adjunct option – and [Binghamton University - Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science: Programs: Academic Departments: EDD: Minor in General Engineering](http://www2.binghamton.edu/watson/programs/academic-departments/engineering-design/academic-programs/general-engineering-minor.html) regarding engineering minor.

if he changes his mind and decides he wants to apply initially to som, he can contact the admissions office to see if he can change his application – but remember som is the most difficult school to get into initially (as well as being very difficult to transfer into).

i know in general som can be very hard to transfer into – BingAmbassador – do you know if that affects applicants for dual degrees as well?

Unfortunately I do not know whether this affects applicants. I do know a bunch of people who are doing dual degree programs in Harpur and another school. Speaking to an advisor is definitely needed to pursue this type of program.

Thank you so much for the information! Can you initially apply to both schools or can you only apply to one? I know that Binghamton is a difficult school to get into. My son has pretty good statistics at this point… 4.0 GPA, 1470 SAT (CR+M), 10 AP classes. If he gets in, he should enter with a decent amount of credits. I just wonder is he has a better chance to get in the SOM now rather than later.

i think you’d have to contact the admissions office to ask if its possible to apply to be in two schools as part of the initial admissions application.

(also - you mention you think he would enter with a decent number of ap credits – that would certainly help make a dual degree more “doable” - both in terms of the number of credits and in terms of meeting the general education requirements, assuming his ap scores satisfy some of those. gened requirements for watson are here – [Binghamton University - Thomas J . Watson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences: Watson Advising: General Education: General Education Requirements](http://www2.binghamton.edu/watson/advising/gened/gened-reqs.html) and here is chart of ap equivalents - http://www2.binghamton.edu/watson/advising/pdfs/AP%20Equivalency%20Chart.pdf</a> similar info for som students can be found here and the links therein - [Binghamton University - Academics: Schools and Colleges: School of Management: Current Students: Undergrad: Academic Advising: Curriculum](http://www2.binghamton.edu/som/curstudents/undergrad/advising/curriculum.html) ) but i would still recommend talking with advisers at the school before committing to a dual degree.
