Can you edit your Common App essay after submission?

As the colleges I'm applying to have a application deadline of 01 January, I thought I had more time to work on my Common App essay. However, I was informed by my counselor today that the application must be submitted by this Tuesday (09 December) because that's the final deadline from my school's College Office in order to send transcripts and final applications to the universities in time.

I am thoroughly unhappy with my essay and was hoping to spend the next three weeks fixing it up. Additionally, I am awaiting feedback from an English teacher, and I doubt he'll be ready by Tuesday. The Common App site says a student can submit up to three versions of an essay.

Does this mean I can submit my application with a temporary half-baked essay by this Tuesday but send a polished version of my essay to the schools I'm applying to before their official deadline? Thanks for your help!

No, once you submit the essay to a certain school, you may not resubmit it to them.

I don’t understand why your school can’t submit transcripts without your completed CA. In my D’s school the students need to list their colleges in the CA dashboard, so that the high school knows where they are applying, but they don’t have to send the CA to the colleges until they are ready.
