Can you exaggerate?

Hi

Obviously I know and believe that lying on your application is wrong, but is exaggeration acceptable? For example, if you helped out at a football team's practice several times would it be acceptable for you to say that you coached the team?

Thanks

No.

That’s not exaggeration, that’s lying.

Yes, you can. You have free will. However, it’s also called lying.

Now for the next question; Can your acceptance be rescinded for lying on your application? Yes it can. Don’t do it.

It depends what you call exaggerate. In most cases, it is a lie if there is no truth behind it. However, there is some grey area one may stretch though. For instance, some school orchestras have section leaders in rotation for different performance. On the application, one only need to state which year disregarding the actual term. So one may put “section leader” for the position even that is only for one performance as it is the highest position once hold. Another example, there was one speech competition with only 3 competitors. The one with the lowest score claims to be the second runner up although only the top one would win a prize. In these cases, they are not really lying but making it appeared more significant than it is. I think these are exaggerations. If you helped a team in practice, it does not mean you have a coaching role. If you did coach the team even once, you may claim to be a coach on EC.
