Can you get 800's on your SAT IIs if you only study for the AP exam of that subject?

Is it a given that you can get 800's on your SAT IIs if you only study for the AP exam of that subject?

Not a given, but it certainly makes it easier and there's usually a lot of overlap, depends on the subject. Be careful to study the topics that aren't on the AP most.

No..but like krbanks said, there are overlaps.

Take AP Physics B and the SAT II Physics, for example. They both overlap yet the SAT II has a few more topics and goes less into the "mathy" stuff, choosing to focus more on theory..so you still have to study for both.

Personally I thought the SAT II was easier than the AP, just a different emphasis I supppose.

Well I know that self-studying for ap chemistry really helped me out for the sat ii's especially since the mc from the ap test was practically the whole test [w/ the exception of the T/F section], but yeah I escaped with a 770 so I guess it's generally helpful and makes life a lot easier, just make sure to schedule the test right or else you'll end up like me and having the two tests three weeks a part which led me to review some concepts.

not for ap bio!! a lot of kids got 5s on the ap test but got below 700 on the sat II

From personal experience, all the study you need, like to get the raw info, is usually in the AP curriculum. However, I also went through a test prep book to accustomize myself to the SAT II test (some of them are kinda wierd, and also a little different than the AP).

Also, don't take the history ones a year later (like I did) because you'll forget everything..

Generally, no.
For example: Literature you can't really study for...I got an 800 before taking any AP english classes, and it's not because i'm special or anything, it's because it's just not stuff they teach you in school.
Foreign language SAT2s are a little more difficult--getting a 5 on a language AP does not guarantee scores over 700 on the SAT2.
History seems to be pretty closely correlated, though. Although I know someone with a 4 on AP US and a 740 on the SAT2.

yup so true , i ve said it like a hundred times on this forum already...(and i know lots of kids whom this happened to , beacause they didnt read the barrons book)....
lol but i read the barrons book in 2 week and got a 790...( up from a 640-660 on my first practice test)

yes, it is possible. toook APUSh (5) on fri then took SAT II (with no studying) on sun (800). it probably helped that the two tests occurred at about the same time.

5'd AP Bio, 740 on Bio-M... I wish I studied more.

Do the AP/SAT II subjects in question come naturally to you?

If they do, then you'll be fine (speaking from personal experience).

Otherwise, you'll benefit greatly from some extra studying.

I scheduled my SAT II's in May, so that they were taken the weekend before (or was it between?) the AP exams. This way, any studying I did for APs kinda doubled as SAT prep.

But like I mentioned, the subjects I did were those that I found myself to be naturally good at. I didn't even bother with SAT II books; AP books did just fine for a quick study.

usually it should. kinda depends on how well you study. but for my world history SAT II, the questions were pretty different than the AP exam. more detail-oriented, rather than broad-based kind of questions. it really depends on what test you're taking, i think.

I've gone the other way. I got a 750 and 790 on Bio and Chem respectively. I took (and will take) the APs the following year. (Got a 5 on Bio, Chem...?)

Well... I think I could have done really well on my SAT Chem test from my AP studying... if I had realized that there were 85 questions, not 75.
Wow, and I thought I had plenty of time...
Now I get to retake it!!! YAY ;)

i found the sat 2 chem really easy after taking ap chem. got over a 700 on it. sadly i only got a 3 on the ap exam :(

er, i dunno about 800, but on the whole SAT IIs are quite a bit easier than APs.

Yes, it is possible. You can even get 800 on your SAT2 wihout studying specifically for any of the College Board tests. You have to know your subject very, very well. You also have to be lucky enough that you don't make a careless mistake and that you don't get a question you do not know the answer despite a thorough knowledge of the subject. Kids routinely get 800s on the language SAT2s without studying, when they fluent, and know the grammar well. Kids for whom the language is their first, are a category of kids that can do that. Not always, because there always can be some spoiler. I also know some kids who are so proficient in math, that study for the tests are unnecessary.

Even if you are in the category where it is a decent possibility you can score that high, it is wise to peruse a sample test, at very least, so that you are familiar with how it is formatted. It'll go a lot smoother.

I want to add that I know kids--my son is one who did better (5) on the AP than on the SAT2 of the same subject (670) despite spending more time with the SAT2 test. He did not study for the AP at all--he could not even go to the review sessions that were offered at his school. We did not even buy the AP subject practice test book. So you go figure!

There is no need to prep for Math II, and it doesn't have a corresponding AP. For chemistry, the AP and SAT II cover the same material so no need to study extra. The AP US History generally doesn't cover much if anything after 1980 while this material is occasionall tested on SAT II. The smart thing to do is check if the formatting of the SAT II is unusual (Chemistry for example) and familiarize yourself with it rather than spend time studying material you already have a firm grasp of.

It really depends.

5 AP Chem --> 770 SAT II Chem
5 AP USH --> 750 SAT II USH

(incidentally they happen to be my lowest SAT II scores though)

Yes, I think US History is one test that is relatively easy to score an 800 just by preparing for the AP exam, but you will have to have a solid understanding of the AP material. If you are able to score around 80% to 90% on the AP multiple choice questions, then you will have a great shot at an 800.
