at various places? My son is going for a competitive scholarship with a total of maybe between 200-300 students, held on 2 different Saturdays. With that many students, it is hard to imagine interviews going on with each. What do they DO at these things? I'm sure it various by place but in general what are some things he should expect in a large group? Only 20 kids will get a scholarship out of that so there must be a way to narrow them down but I just am not sure what. I will inquire at the college closer to the time but in the meantime, just curious.

At one school my daughter met with 3 people for each interview (1 prof and 2 honors students). Each interview was about 20-25 minutes. They discussed her previously written scholarship essay, goals, ECs, what she could contribute to the school, etc.

The night before the interview there was a large dinner for applicants and their parents with musical entertainment by students. Breakfast and lunch was served on interview day again for all of us. While the students were being interviewed and hearing the President and Dean speak, the parents attended workshops on fin aid, health and counseling services, safety dept, and also heard the Pres and Dean. There was also a mini concert and performance by an acapella group. Late afternoon, all were invited for refreshments and to meet with all dept chairs for open discussion. All in all a lovely but tiring day.

Good luck to your child.

When my D went to a scholarship weekend, it was a combination of "wining and dining" the students, group activities and group interviews. In the interviews they were asked questions about what they had written in their scholarship essays as well as on general topics. For her's there were about 50 kids, all were "guaranteed" about a half tuition scholarship and some of them were eventually awarded full tuition, R&B.

I didn't attend, but I believe the parents program was pretty much as cmbmom described.
