My family has helped a young man who has been living here and there since he was 17. He is now in the National guard and wanting to attend community college. He was approved for fasfa but also has the GI money paying for his classes. However, now the school is stating he can’t have the fasfa money? Of course he is told this 3 weeks before needing to start classes. He is an independent student also and just was able to get an apartment. He was depending on that money for his books, supplies , and living expenses. Can the school not give him fasfa money just because he has the military covering tuition?? From what we can find he should be able to use both. Any input is welcomed. Thanks!
There’s no such thing as fafsa money. FAFSA is an application.
If the military is paying then don’t they also provide some sort of housing allowance? Doesn’t he still get paid by being in the national guard?
What is his FAFSA EFC? It may be too high.
Having filed FAFSA he can always get a student loan of $5500 for freshman year which should take care of books. And Pell Grant may be off the table based on his GI Benefits (just my guess). We’ll have to see if @sybbie719 can weigh in on this.
We do,you mean “he was approved for FAFSA”. Anyone can file a FAFSA.
I am going to refer this to @kelsmom since she will know exactly how these monies are credited
What is the student’s EFC?
Is the student attending full or part time?

Government money from the GI bill is supposed to be last payer. This means that the government pays after all other scholarships and grants are deducted. Not the other way around.
