Can you put symbols in your CommonApp supplement essay?

I want to copy and paste my chinese name in my supplemental essay for UMICH instead of spelling out how it sounds. I know it will work in MSword, but will the admissions readers be able to see it on the app? Or will it just come out looking like computer language?

The supplement asks to upload the document. If they read it straight from MSword, it would be okay. But if they convert it somehow, I'm not sure. Do you know if they just open the raw file or not? This same question applies to the main essay for CommonApp. Although I'm not using any symbols for that one, the same concept applies. Anybody with an answer or experience doing this?

Put it in the word document, upload it, then view the uploaded document to see if it properly works.

Test it out: Upload the document with the symbols and then print preview it - if it shows on the preview then it is fine (because that is what colleges see), if it doesn’t show then it won’t work.

Thanks for the responses. I’ll try that out!
