Okay...so my academic record is wacky. I have NO idea what Yale (or any school really...) will think about it.
here it is!
Grades:
9th grade: I got As/A-s in all my classes except for B+'s Freshman Bio, Music Theory, and Art
10th grade: I got straight As.
11th grade: straight As with an A- in art
12th grade: currently straight As

That means my GPA is:
3.5ish for Freshman year
then a 4.0
4.0
4.0
3.83 gpa
Decent right? Well, think again...unfortunately I go to a super competitive private school that ranks for no reason whatsoever so I'm ranked 10/50. That's a problem.

My SAT reading is low, but ACT reading is high and my SAT math is high but my ACT math is lower.

How are colleges (including Yale) going to look at all of this stuff? I'm obviously concerned with my rank, but really, do I look competent enough?

I feel rank is VERY important…EXCEPT with schools that small where tiny tiny differences can move one from 1st to 15th, and therefore down to top 30%. So I’m betting that they know how to consider that…when they see your test scores are good. And they have regional people read apps, so they “know” high schools (their size, rigor, competitiveness, etc.).

I agree with R124687. Since your high school is competitive Yale should take that into account. So numerically not a good rank, but the evaluation of rank is based on its context so you have the answer. Submitting only ACT is fine, I think. A lot of people don’t take ACT seriously and I don’t think people at Yale Admissions Office are among them.

Okay…so you guys don’t think that a regional rep will just weed me out in 2 secs after seeing my rank?

Also,
Can I have your advice on essays?
I do a few ECs and I really like them…so life is good in that regard. I have leadership positions, zillions of awards, etc. ECs are the one thing that I actually CAN do.
BUT I’m afraid that yale won’t realize I do them if I don’t talk about them in my essay. However, if i talk about my ECs only then they might think I’m not “academic” enough for them.

Ummm are you trying to be funny? because you aren’t.
That’s def not what I was asking about. My freshman year grades in IMPORTANT classes are fine. I was just wondering about my rank/essays.

i want to protest to yale to throw out freshman year grades

Im really sorry for being a jerk but i just read today that “protest” doesn’t take a preposition into account. Sorry. but i had to comment. I need to apply my knowledge somewhere and i’d love to do it on the SAT forum but there are no questions like that.

freshman grades are considered but certainly dont matter very much unless you took ap calc as a freshman.

they see it as either the easy year or the mess up year. it doest help you much if your freshman grades are much higher than your soph/ jr/ sr grades (that would probably hurt you, actually). they like to see improvement.
