Can you start playing club sports in college?

Hi, I am a high school student and I don’t currently play any sports. I want to start playing in college because it seems like it would be a good way to meet people. I am wondering if it’s possible to start playing any club sports in college if it’s my first time playing the sport.

Some club teams are as competitive as varsity teams.

You can play intramurals, which are just played for fun at the school. No traveling, cost is lower.

A lot of colleges have club teams for sports that you may not have played before and they welcome newbies. And yes, they are a great way to meet people and have something fun to do. My son started fencing in college. Never fenced before thought it would be fun. Made some great friends and is loving it. At orientation or early in the year, most schools have an activities fair. Go and check out all the clubs. You will find sports and things to do that will interest you. Most will say no experience needed.

I know a lot of US students who started playing club rugby in college. I’d think clubs like ultimate or fencing would welcome some beginners. It would be harder with a sport like basketball that a lot of people play.

It depends on the college and the sport.

Also remember their is both club and intramural of many sports. Clubs typically compete against other schools. Intramural’s typically are made up of multiple teams competing against each other. My kids did many intramural sports including your traditional sports like basketball and soccer and then your non-traditional fun wacky stuff like inner tube water polo and team battleship. Team battleship consisted of 4 people in a canoe in a pool throwing buckets of water at another team and the first one to sink their opponent won. Bottom line, there typically is something for everyone.
