club sports

so, what exactly are club sports? i'm thinking of doing club volleyball when i get to college next year, but do we have to try out? the only thing holding me back is that i haven't really played volleyball since gym class jr year and i'm not in my peak physical shape. the thing is though is that i want something more competitive than intramurals but i'm afraid they won't let me on the team.

also, if that doesn't work out, i figured i can go out for the crew team since my older brother made the team his freshman year in college w/o any rowing experience (i'm light so i figure i can be a coxswain). is that the situation at all colleges or just his (holy cross)?

can anybody clarify?

I know that you have to try out for club hockey at the few schools my son was considering.

yeah club sports have tryouts; anyone can play intramurals

my suitemate last year didn’t make club soccer so she played intramurals. she tried out again this year and made it.

The competitiveness of club sports varies. At my small college, all club sports with one exception are basically intramurals. At larger universities, the club sports might be filled with former high school varsity athletes who did not make the varsity team in college.

My club ultimate frisbee team has an A and a B team. Anyone can play for the B team, but you need to try out and be accepted to make the A team.

there are tryouts for club sports.

some sports will have 2 teams, and they will take anyone on the lower team, particularly for sports that aren’t as common in high school (crew, frisbee). Doubtful there will be a club soccer team with 40 people.

You’re right, generally club sports are more competitive than intramurals but you don’t have to be NCAA level by any means (my school’s club hockey had a couple players who had very little prior playing experience but were eager to learn and play). Also, as a club sport member, you will have the opportunity to travel and play against other colleges club teams rather than just other campus dorms or Greek houses as in intramurals.

^ Bump this. Does playing a club sport help you for med school? I have a passion for hockey and I really do want to play it next year. However, I could be devoting those ~10 hours/week volunteering, etc. I’m probably just going to play for one year so would it be worth it to put this on a med school app? Will the med school admissions peeps just glance over this facet or will they take it into consideration? I know I sound like a typical premed-d-bag, but I want to make the right decision.

If you go to a large school, club can be very competitive. For example, club soccer at umich is VERY competitive. My roommate is amazing (international student) and he was out at the first round of cuts. We made a Men’s A team for IM and THAT was crazt competitive as well. I think some Men’s A teams here could take smaller college’s club teams.
