Hi, I'm an international student that needs $3,000 more to cover college costs. I'm will receive financial aid for the academic year. I would like to stay in the US on summers to work. (Salaries in my country are really bad)

Do most colleges charge students for staying in the dorms for the summer?

yeah, you can as long as you would pay for the summer housing, and in general, summer housing is quite expensive.

Does it cost the same amount that for the academic year?

different schools cost you differently. But for most schools, it is more expensive for summer housing.

Summer housing at my school is about $2000 for 3 months only.

I would advise you to contact the residential department at your school, and ask for more information about its cost.

Some schools will have cheaper housing if for example you have a paid summer research position .

Most internationals can't work regular jobs on a student visa, so check on that too.

It varies. Some colleges have programs that bring participants to campus (sports camps, science camps, conferences) and some residence halls space must be emptied for their use. This, as well as institutional policies, plans for renovations, and other things, can impact whether students can live on campus for the summer.

At our university, few students stay the summer on campus. But no one who wants to stick around needs to be homeless. Many students who live off-campus leave town for the summer but are on 12-month leases. Many students try to recoup some of their unused rent money by offering summer sublets at a great price.

at my college, if you work at the school over the summer, housing is free, so you can check to see if you can get a job at your school, and that may take care of the housing costs.

Many years ago at my husband's school, the fraternities would rent rooms in their houses out to students who wanted to stay and work thru the summer. He did that for one summer while working a construction job and thought it was great. It was on campus but cheaper and had more freedom than living in a dorm room.

Im sure you could find cheaper housing than $2000 for 3 months.

yeah, sure!!! so I don't plan to live on campus during summer.
