Can your chosen major have an effect on admission chances?

Would an applicant be looked upon favorably simply because he or she has chosen an unpopular major?

How about on the flip side, would someone's chances be worse if he or she chose a popular major?

How about undecided applicants, are they better off or worse off?

i had the same question. depends on the school. and if they have a school within a school. i know harvard and mit dont care what your major. If the School has like 4 schools(science, engineering, nursing, education) then the most popular school will be hardest to get into.

i dont think major will affect it greatly if at all

In general, major does not matter and being undecided is not a problem. Exceptions are things like what cb41 cited, when you have to apply to a specific School within a college (eg. Engineering, Architecture, etc.); being a woman interested in Engineering (with the credentials to back it up); and interest in a rare major (eg. Classics, again with the creds to support your interest).

So many students change their major while in college, they really don’t expect you to stay with what you’ve put on your application.
