Can your SAT/ACT essay (seen by the admissions committee) hurt your chances?

The admissions committee sees your essay written for the ACT (SAT, also, I presume????).

Can your essay hurt you?

Why would they even want to see your essay?

as far as I know, colleges will only look at the ACT or SAT essay if there's a huge discrepancy between your essay score (like a 4/5 total) and an amazing college essay. Then, they'll be able to guess that you had more help on your college essay, and they may think that you didn't write it on your own or that you used an essay editing service.

besides that, they don't really use it (i don't think).

Ohh. Okay. Thanks. :] It didn't make sense to me. I mean, what would they want with a 30-minute essay? Haha.

My daughters GC told her that in one school district that she interned as a student at that some of the wealthy districts have their kids packaged, so in essence, ALOT of essay guidance/coaching(maybe even more than just coaching by outside services) if a kid produces a exquisite application essay, yet the SAT is not of the same caliber, may raise a few flags, if the kid is too polished. No idea if this is true, but don't think my daughter would even think of something like this unless told.
