Canadian Election- What do Other Canadien Students Think?

Liberals attempted to shoot hurt the conservative runner by portraying him as a Bush-lover. Guess it didn't work.

Canada has the higest HDI in the world at .96 (It's out of 1)

I disagree, I think it would be my favorite party: the NDP.

conservatives won in canada? that's shocking.

it's about time canada grows a brain.

packer, Liberals have held the party in the last 20 years of Canada. As of now, the liberal party is filled with corruption and scandals. It's not much wonder as to why the conservatives won. Politics in Canada is drastically different than the United States.

Seeing how Alito just passed, you perhaps could say the same for the United States.

What is wrong with Alito?

I would also like to note that the conservative party in Canada is relatively liberal compared to US politics. Our political spectrum has had a large frameshift to the right of most other countries.

yea it goes like this
Liberals....Conservatives...Democrats...............Republicans

Yeah, but where do you think you would put the BQ in relation to the Liberals, do you think they are left of the Liberals?

Depends. The BQ is a decentralist party, and a lot of the founding members were previously Conservatives. So fiscally it might be more to the right sometimes than the Liberals, but socially, they're about the same or sometimes to the left.

Tpeck, Alito is about as conservative as you can go. Personally, I don't care much about the issue, but the previous poster was mocking that Canada needed to grow a brain whereas Alito was happening at the same time. The problem with Alito is well, he's Alito. While the Democrats paint a ****-poor picture of him, it does have some resemblence of a Helen Keller judge. He'll vote "right" over and over without listening or caring to the case. Worst case scenarios of turnovers of Roe vs Wade isn't even the worst case scenario! The fact is with the loss of Sanda D O'Connor, we lose the moderate sitting in the Supreme and instead have a far-right in her place.

Actually, if it was possible I would rather have Helen Keller be appointed instead of Alito (I happen to agree with her politics) :).

As a Canadian (my home and native land) I am very happy about the Canadian elections…and Alito. The man was nominated to be a judge, not a senator—his politics are beside the point. Bush won the election with the promise of nominating a judge in the mold of Scalia; this was not a secret to any but for those who slept through the elections. It was no conspiracy: That’s democracy folks.

Someday, when you're running your own autocratic state, you may be able to pick the judges according to your own sensibilities and agendas. Until then, it's Alito.

On the contrary, I disagree. His political decisions are behind all his decisions.

But you're right. It is democracy. The Democrats have themselves to blame for not picking a better candidate to run against George W. Bush.

Actually, it's a republic. One that has concentrated so much power that the idea of true democratic representation has been sullied at best. I don't dispute the fact that Bush got elected with the prospect of appointment privilege--that is related to a functioning republic. But the right of our elected senators to filibuster Alito is as well.
