Canadian High School Students and American Universities

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone here knows about how US universities handle Canadian applications. In Canada,( Vancouver, BC)we have a different grading system. There are no wieghted or unweighted courses and an A is 86% and up. Basically eveything is very different, so I'm wondering how the universities handle that.

hey, buddy!

I am from vancouver 2.

for your question, I believe they will recaulculate your scores by using their own system, at least its true at Stanford.

i live in Vancouver too (well WR to be specific). Unis in the states just convert our grades into their system so their comparable to American students as DinaZhang said - at least I think so

But I have attended High School in both US and Canada (Vancouver as well), and I have found it harder to get say, an 88% in Canada, then a 92% in the US.

there are grade inflated schools in canada...
and many students have 90%+ as well...
you just have to stand out in other ways if your avg is low.

oh no...this'll do SO much damage 2 my GPA =(

btw im from vancouver too...where are you guys all applying?

well im applying next year because im in grade 11 but
I think it'll be harvard, yale, columbia, princeton, mcgill, oxford and cambridge

hey im in grade 11 too! which school u go to? wow so many good schools im jealous..haha, im applying columbia ed, cornell, upenn, nyu, usc, and others undecided...maybe one HYPS
OH and UBC--safety

I highly recommend kids here in Canada to look at a broader range of schools when it comes to college admissions in the states. When I applied to hopkins last year, virtually no one'd heard of it at my high school, as if it were some sort of small "community college."

Of course, I strongly encourage people to try out HYPS if they feel confident enough about their creditials. However, try to enlarge your "radar screen" of potential colleges at the same time. There are a number of outstanding colleges (evidently under-valued by USNews's controversial ranking system) that can readily rival the ivies in terms of academic prestige/quality and reputation. Schools like Tufts, Hopkins, Brandeis, Rice, George Washington, Boston College, Davidson, Williams, Carleton, Bowdoin, and Colgate College, can easily provide you with world classs education and reputation in their respective fields of study.

Goodluck guys;)

I got to LFA, its small private school you might not have heard of it. I actually think Ill probably apply to ubc just in case.
where do you go dead_crocodile?

Jimmy, I am considering applying to tufts, brandeis & boston college, as well as lehigh university. the thing is that my mom is a total prestige whore and she'll only let me out of her sight to attend a 'famous university', so...

a-time..yep ive heard of it..i go to pw, and apart from my classmates, i really hate my school =( btw to answer ur original question, one girl at my school who got into harvard this year told me that US universities didnt recalculate our grades and an A remains an A..dunno if its true tho..i sure hope so..

no they dont, they have trained international officers who are familliar with our stuff

^^

Yep, an adcom told me that they will look at the standards at Universities in your home country when making decisions for internationals.

Yes they look at your grading scale in your own country when making decisions
