Canadian students applying to Harvard?

One thing we're forgetting is that a 95 or 98 or even a 100 at a lower-level public school might not even get you a 90 (yes i did say 90) at a catholic school or upper-level public school. It's all very subjective. Btw the highest average at my school out of our 1000+ grades is 95, and that was one of my classmates in grade 11. No that does not mean we're all idiots lol, it means that our teachers have different expectations and that our school has different grading standards and that our board has different standards.

Most of my friends from my old school go to a lower-level public school where a lot of people get mid-high 90's, but their curriculum is ridiculously easy compared to ours (different school board). So I still think class ranks counts for a lot more than "grades" by themselves.

Alberta's education is one of the best in Canada.

I am ranked 1, and may be anywhere from 1-3 at midterms. That should count for something.

But anyways, I think Canadians with +90 averages in the most rigorous programs should know that grades will not be the breaking point. Acceptance would depend on other factors.

^^ im not im just saying... what type of high school do u go to lol

im not trying to make myself look superior... heck if i care lol... the only thing i have not going for me is test scores... other than that im not really sure what was the point to ur comment serendipity...

but yah, im not gonna lie, i rather be in any other province except ontario right now lol... ottawa sucks haha.... and i have heard good things about alberta

see i dont think the US really cares about the grades lol unless they actually KNOW ur high school and the grading system (cough* UTS cough)...

I go to one of the largest high schools in Western Canada, with around 2400 students and 800 in the graduating class.

They will care if you do IB/AP because the scores would more or less standardized.

mhm IB is nice cuz a 7 is a 7 no matter where you're from. if they see straight 7's, they're not going to go "wow that's probably an easy school"

wow...800 in a graduating class sounds insane...i hope its not all IB =P
i've got a much smaller graduating class but macleans ranked my school #3 in canada a few years ago

and serendipity, I actually just googled and apparently there is a "Harvard Canadian Club" Welcome | Harvard Canadian Club

edit: haha...and i think your school got ranked #1 in the same rankings

Haha funny thing, Canadianftw, the school that was ranked #1 tried to recruit me, but I turned it turn. It is actually just a small academic school that weeds out applicants through standardized testing, with low funding and few extracurriculars available. Essentially, it is filled with Asian academia stereotypes (I can say this without bias because I am Asian). That's why I didn't choose it, and instead, went the huge school, where I've been really happy. Sad thing is, everyone in that school admits that we have better teachers and more opportunities.

Only 10% of the students at my school are full IB, with a few handful doing certificate.

OMG I want in (to that club)!

I think it's pretty clear that the school you're talking about is Old Scona.

lol u guys kinda scare me.. i go to a pretty average school(well atleast i think so).. a few kids in my grade get above 90s.... we dont rank but im definitely in the top 5 percent...1 kid got an average of 97(all throughout high school) and got accepted into wharton.. i dont know of anyone else getting into an ivy league school from here..ill be happy if my overall average(from all years of high school) is above 93.. seems kinda ****ty compared to u guys :p.. meh... gotta make hte extracurriculars strong tho.. im still a junior(grade 11) lol

Oohh don't worry. In the end it all comes down to how competitive your school is and how you are graded. I think there is a blank for your counselor to write that down on your application anyway :)

^^ my school doesnt even rank lol... let alone do grade conversions haha... so there goes one aspect of my app... LOL... man we got some crazy high scoring people in here... go canadians!

Oh, illuminar, it was pretty obvious, since that's the school that was ranked #1 in Macleans. I wasn't trying to hide anything haha.

I'm sure that above a certain point, Harvard will stop looking at grades and start looking at essays, extracurriculars, teacher recs, supplements (if applicable).

serendipity, hm i was under the assumption that you went to jasper
while old scona and my school were ranked in the "top academic schools," jasper topped the rankings for "best overall" =)

and yeah..it'll be nice to have the complete opposite of what happened to stanford canadians come april

double post..

^^word

wow so everyone goes to some crazy good schools lol... how are all your teachers?

Macleans ranks high schools?

I did not know this...

If you didn't know, then how do you know I was talking about Old Scona? Unless you go there... In which case, I apologize if I have offended you with my comments about that school haha.

Just wanted to say hi! Another canuck on the boards.

Just got rejected by Stanford ED. Brutal, but not unexpected. Seeing all the other rejectees on the board made me feel a bit better.

Now setting sights on the other major US schools, although not really expecting anything big. But you know what they say, you have a 0% chance if you don't apply. :)

BTW, I'm a BC-er! Hurrah!

Good luck to all of us!

I used to live in St. Albert, right outside Edmonton. Over the years, many kids in the Bengali community in Edmonton went there (or Ainley) so it's familiar to me, but I don't have any personal ties =p
