Canadian Universities for Polytechnic Students from Singapore.

Hi, this is my first post and I hope you guys can help me out with some questions.

I will be graduating soon from poly and I am looking to further my studies in Canada and maybe USA. However, I cannot find any information on admission requirements for poly students on most universities website. I was hoping you guys can give me advice on the admission requirements (if some of you have friends from poly studying in canada or USA) for canadian and american universities, their general selectivity and reputation. I am looking to major in Finance (1st choice) or Economics.

Here are the list of schools I wish to attend.

For Canada (listed in accordance to preference):
McGill University
Queen's University
University of Toronto
McMaster University
University of British Columbia
University of Alberta
University of Western Ontario

For USA (I will need partial aid. My family will be able to contribute USD 32k for tuition and expenses):

University of Notre Dame
Reed College
Bates College
Boston College
Williams College
Amherst College
College of William and Mary
University of California, Berkeley
University of Michigan, Ann Harbour
University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign
University of Texas at Austin
University of Wisconsin at Madison
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Canadian Universities will be top choice as I wish to get a PR and work there after my studies. But it will be very difficult to reject a chance to study at these top universities in USA (even though i know it's almost impossible for polytechnic students to get into despite my good grades).

so are you looking to apply as a first year or transfer?

That's the problem, I don't know if I have to apply as a transfer student or a freshman. I sent some emails, all they replied was some retyped answers. Did not help me at all in solving my problems.

Mostly likely, I will be applying as Freshman.

does your polytechnic award associate degrees to graduates? because I think you can go straight to 3rd year of uni in the US if they admit you. What about universities in Singapore, I heard that NUS is really good, do they accept applications from Associate degree holders?

IF NUS is that good, I would not have to go overseas. I don't believe in those rankings (NUS ranked higher than PENN what the hell...)

..........
I have nothing against u wanting to go overseas. coz i am applying to US too.

but i don't think you are being very fair with the NUS comment.

no matter what, people who do the ranking are professionals. there are reasons for being ranked that way.

so do polytechnics award associate degrees? cos' if they do, then you can definitely apply as a transfer to US colleges.

If you are looking to major in Finance, did you consider York University in Canada? Their business school has one of the top reputations.

However McGill is more widely recognized overseas and the Desautels faculty of Management is good. There's a large international student base here, which is very cool. And you can't beat Montreal as a fun place to live!

Yes, you are not being fair with the comparison. My advise is that you do your undergraduate studies in NUS. I truly believe it is better than Penn. College rankers are not idiots.

You may wish to further your graduate studies in the US.

Good luck

"I truly believe it is better than Penn"

Really??.. you're seriously in denial. Penn is one of the best universities in the world.

I agreed with u naff.

Today University of Hong Kong is ranked above stanford and NUS is ranked above Dartmouth. Why spend so much money going abroad when we can have ivy league quality education in our own backyard?

Damn i hate rankings.

I meant NUS is better for Singaporeans and especially Poly students.

1st: How good is your grades from Poly?

U should have a GPA of 3.5 and up to even start attempting UBC, McGill.
as far as I know, there are ZERO Singapore Diploma holders in UBC the last few yrs. U might be the 1st.

U should know very well, that UWO-Ivey don't have direct admission to their Bschool

if your Poly GPA is above 3.5 and do well for SAT, applying as freshman no issue. Transfer student.... bad idea.
U have a good chance with these, but very likely start in General College, work hard and transfer into their Bschool. Miss the mark, and U might be studying Finance but your diploma will not have the prestigious Bchool name printed!

University of Michigan, Ann Harbour
University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign
University of Texas at Austin
University of Wisconsin at Madison
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

the rest, U might need more than a certificate of Merit to help U.

Well... new THES rankings came up. NUS is lower than Upenn. They got it right this time by removing Faculty members to rank their own school criterion.

Good luck in the admission process! Still think your list of schools is rather tough. Should perhaps aim lower so you won't waste lots of money on application. (assuming US$100 per application).

Maybe the large schools like U of Toronto, U of Alberta, UMich, UIUC and U Wisconsin-Madison.

amazing THES ranking..

National Uni of Singapore ranked higher than many Ivy? like Yale, Brown etc..
NTU ranked higher than LSE, Darthmouth?

I seriously doubt Singapore Gov believe this BS survey..
Why send the best Scholars overseas where the Local Uni are far far far better than these.

base on this ranking, TS can get into Uni like Queensland so easily with 2 yrs exemptions. but NYU? very hard and might not see any credits transfer.

NUS is not that good.

But it's a lot better than 3/4 of OP's list.
And a world away from places like University of Queensland.

You apply as a first-year student but should liaise with university beforehand to see how many exemptions you can get.

Btw what's your GPA? I suggest you apply to Brit unis as well.
