Hello!
I’m an international student and planning on applying to some Canadian Universities. I’m hoping for some university recommendations. I’m a junior whose grades are above average and I don’t have a lot of extra curriculars. Money is an issue but around 60,000 CAD could work. Thank you for your time!
You’ll need to give more details of what you are looking for. Major? Geographic location? Size? Small town vs big city? French or English? What is your country? What are your grades and your SAT or ACT?
I agree with @bouders that we need more information. There are nearly 100 Canadian universities (80 public ones) which vary in many ways and are spread across the second largest country in the world. You can google “wikipedia list of universities in Canada” as well as we can, but we can give your more specific information if we know what you are looking for.
Is 60,000 CAD your limit for four years, or your limit per year? How much “above average” are your grades? If you give a sort of US equivalent or where you stand in your class then that might help (since we would understand it). Do you have a preference for size and/or location?
Should we assume that you want classes in English (rather than French)? In the unlikely event that you happen to be a citizen of France that would also matter (it would help with tuition in the province of Quebec).
Your lack of ECs won’t matter at all for Canadian universities. Most won’t even ask.
@DadofTwoGirls There are some programs where ECs do matter at Canadian universities.
My 10th percentage was 93.4 and my CGPA was 10 out of 10. I’m going to give the SAT this December. And I’m not very picky when it comes to location and class size. Ranks don’t matter to me a lot. About the money, I think I can arrange about 80,000 to 100,000 CAD with some loans and such. That’s the amount for all four years.
Also I don’t speak french so the Medium of instruction would have to be English. I’m open to learning the language though,
Top Canadian universities will cost $200K over 4 years. Your budget is going to be what limits you. I recommend googling various Canadian universities + international tuition to see if you can find something in your price range. Room and board will take up most of your budget. That will cost $50-$60K over 4 years.
@bouders will do Thanks for your input!
“Top Canadian universities will cost $200K over 4 years.”
This is true, as @bouders said, for the top schools (Toronto, McGill, UBC, Waterloo, …).
There are other still very good schools which are a bit less, perhaps about C$130,000 for four years. You might want to check out schools such as U.Victoria, Simon Fraser, Saskatchewan, Dalhousie, or Memorial University of Newfoundland. I am not sure whether you will find anything as low as C$100,000 for four years, nor how you feel about going to a “good but not as well known” school.
I agree that you should google “various Canadian universities + international tuition” and see if you will find anything in your price range. I think that you will probably get close, but I am not sure if it will be in a location which attracts the largest number of international students.
@DadTwoGirls Thanks!!
