Canadian's position in the admission

I’m a Canadian-chinese holding a Canadian passport. How do colleges consider Canadians in their admission? Do they have a seperate line or just catagorized as international students and are mixed together with all the other asians.

I also heard they some colleges have need-blind which also covers the canadians.

Are you a resident in Canada or a permanent resident in United States? I don't know for sure, but I think either way you are considered international. Although you will be compared to other applicants (US citizens), being an international will help you a little in admission.

well i'm currently studying in Hong Kong. i heard that asians, esp chinese, hav to be very competitive in this field. So i was thinking whether being a Canadian would have a higher chance than asians.

It will help for financial aid that you have a Canadian passport, but not for admission.

so canadians wont have the advantage over the asians?

clementyc,

being Canadian will make a difference at certain schools.

For instance, all of the Ivies and a few others, Williams, Amherst, Middlebury, Wellesley will treat you as a "need-blind" student and you will be afforded the benefits of financial aid in admissions.

However, many so-called elite schools are less generous towards Canadians, like say

Duke, Johns Hopkins, Swarthmore and most of the better state-schools.

less generous? no need blind?
but what about my chances of admission

You will be compared against those in the place you went to high school.

You'll be put into the International Pool, but probably considered same as Americans. There is need-blind admissions for Canadian CITIZENS (not landed immigrants/refugees) at all of the Ivies except Brown, and the LACs that fountainsiren listed.

Believe me, I've thoroughly researched this issue as I am Canadian.

I am a Canadian citizen, but I am a permanent resident in US. am I in international pool or same pool with americans?

I think Permanent Resident of Canada is also considered as need-blind financial aid applications since they are able to provide all documents and proof the same as citizen except the passport. Am I right?????

wow_98, you are considered domestic applicant

cfso1952, permanent residents of canada are not considered same as canadian citizens in some schools (for example, columbia states they only consider american citizens, american permanent residents, and canadian citizens for need blind whereas cornell includes permanent residents of canada and mexico as well)

Cornell initially said only citizens as well..maybe later they find that unaccuracy..I believe many other ivies have the same thing. Permanent residents do compete with Canadian pool i think.

do they have a seperate pool for canadians?
so they wont be competed with the asians

no..i don't think they will be competed with Asians.....

I am still confused about permanent residency and citizenship in general. I have lived in US for 7 years. Am I still Canadian? Or, am I American?

If you have the Canadian Citizenship (the card), you are a canadian citizen. Ask your parents they should know
