Canadians studying in the U.S.

Can anyone enlighten me regarding student loan possibilities for Canadians studying in the States? I have found some information about private student loans, and I do have an American co-signer. Are these private types of loans to be avoided, or are they a popular/viable option? thanks!

In general you should try to avoid the private student loans as much as possible.

Thanks for the resources. Struggling to find funding for my son, who really wants to play varsity at a Div. III school. Already rejected during ED by another college and we’re pretty sure it was for financial reasons, since admissions pre-read was positive and he had full support from coach. We were told the decision would be influenced by our need, and the number of intl students applying ED.

What province do you live in? I deal with Canadian students a lot - Ontario - and they get loans through the province. I don’t think I have seen any grants, though …

Ontario…but the college we’re looking at is not on the list of Designated Educational Institutions supported by the Canada Student Loan program, despite the fact that it’s a very good school.

That is too bad. Are there other D3 possibilities for your son?

Not many possibilities at this point. Most team slots were filled during ED. One other school is interested, but coach has been clear there is very little money available for financial aid :frowning: He may be out of luck…we seem to fall into that middle-class category where we can’t afford the tuition, but make too much money to qualify for substantial aid.
