I SIRd to Cal but cancelled to attend another university. I was expecting to only have to pay the $100 sir fee but i'm seeing a bill for a summer school class I signed up for when I thought I was going to Berkeley. I guess I never dropped the class? Am I liable to pay this fee, no one at admissions warned me when I asked for instructions on cancelling my SIR....

Contact summer session office immediately. Summer session is almost over- the longer you wait, the more likely it is that you will have to pay.

And if summer session says you still have to pay, I would recommend contacting other offices too (maybe transfer admissions) and even if they can’t get rid of the charge, they may be able to provide more “proof” of “their” error (like an apology in an email) that you could show to summer session.

But like I said, act fast. The last summer session ends in a week and a half. So once it ends, all disputes may be closed forever.

If they refuse to remove the charge, and you don’t want to pay it (I don’t blame you), you also have the option of not paying it and continuing to send them letters of dispute. After not receiving payment after awhile and if you have documentation of trying to resolve the matter and proving that you really shouldn’t owe them any money they may either drop it themselves or place it in a collections agency. Once it is in collections it will not affect your credit for quite awhile-I’ve had multiple accounts in collections and both took 18 months before they sent me letters saying the accounts were officially in “default” and they would affect my credit. At any time, you can send the collections agency all of your documentation and letter of dispute and it is possible that then the university will get it and drop the account. If they refuse to do so, then you can ask the collections agency to request to settle and the university may give you options on how to make your payment, and you would still have to pay, but only a fraction of the original bill.

@caseytransfer: Was your SIR for the upcoming fall semester? If so, I don’t believe that it would matter if you cancelled your SIR or not (relating to the fees for the summer class). Summer session is an open session. It would be difficult to dispute by referencing your cancelled SIR as you were attending the summer session before your first semester officially began. I would immediately contact the Registrar’s Office to see if you can resolve the situation, but it looks as though the error was on your part unless I have misunderstood your situation.

UC Berkeley just didn’t outright drop you from your summer class for not paying your fee? There wasn’t some sort of fee due by a certain date?
