Candidate's Choice...what exactly does this do?

Hello everyone, I have just received an email from RPI that says I was selected to apply to RPI with Candidate’s choice status. What exactly does this mean for the application? Here is the entire email:

Dear _____,

We are pleased to announce that you are one of the few students we have selected to apply to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with Candidate’s Choice status! My staff and I are excited to consider you for admission, so we urge you to submit your Candidate’s Choice Application as soon as possible.

You are receiving this special invitation to apply because of your high school achievements–and because you could find a great fit at Rensselaer, an innovative university that offers leading programs in architecture, business, engineering, science, the humanities, arts, and social sciences.

As a select candidate, you will enjoy a faster, more convenient application experience. For starters, your Candidate’s Choice Application features a streamlined format that has already been personalized with your basic information. Plus, when we review your application, we will consider you for merit scholarships automatically!

Again, congratulations on being one of the few students selected for this opportunity. We look forward to seeing you apply!

P.S. You may also apply using the Common Application or the Universal College Application. We treat all of these applications equally when considering you for admission, and you will receive the same advantages with each, including automatic consideration for merit scholarships.

I got the same email. Based on googling it, it seems like you get this if you are just on their mailing list. Regardless, you can do this or the common app. Since you were offered this one you might as well do it to show interest.

My son got the same thing.

Yeah, I signed up for a Rensselaer form during a college fair I went to.

You will get so many emails from RPI as a candidate it is crazy.

Newsflash, they (at least as of last year) consider EVERY applicant for merit aid.

Is there any confirmation that applying this way requires selecting ED?

It is pretty ridiculous…I’ve probably gotten at least one email every other day from RPI telling me to apply with Candidate’s Choice. It’s kind of a downer that you don’t really have any advantages over the ordinary applicant (other than it shows a little interest)

How do we send rec letter if you filled out the candidate choice application?
